People haven't really answered the question, have they? :) To get to the point, it's his style of comedy, it's a sort of mix between deadpan and just a little awkward. His friend Tim Key actually helps come up with some of the tasks and usually tries to come up with stuff that would break Alex, like it's highly likely the "special hug" task was a Tim Key idea, because Alex actually really hates personal contact. So staying calm/deadpan is part of his act for the task part of the show, and he can be more relaxed during the studio shoots.
