AITBEK AMANGELDI: Saltanat’s brother on Bishimbayev’s verdict, motive, torture & the Foundation

On May 13th Kazakhstan’s Supreme Court convicted a former government official Kuandyk Bishimbayev of torturing and murdering his wife Saltanat Nukenova and sentenced him to 24 years in prison in a case that has gripped the Central Asian nation. In his first interview in English Aitbek Amangeldy - Saltanat Nukenova’s brother reflects on Bishimbayev’s verdict, the main motive of the murderer and the pivotal moment when he decided he was not gonna let the victim leave the restaurant alive, as well as contemplating on the way we treat women in our culture and how this trial and Saltanat’s Law might help change that. Its a pity from one side that as a country Kazakhstan became “popular” with this case ,but from other side I’m so proud that people from other countries now know that we can easily speak 3 languages(Kazakh,Russian and English ). Even our neighbors Russians didn’t know that we can speak Russian … As a Kazakh who lives abroad ,but always with thoughts about my homeland ,I’m glad to see that my people are taking actions now,changing laws ,helping each other and achieving justice . 5 years ago we couldn’t even talk about and call by name our first president Nazarbayev and his ministers .Nowadays we lock up ex ministers for 24 years … Strong people ,strong nation,keep it up!
