From its origins, hip-hop is based on taking a piece of music, finding that one part people love and looping it. The DJ looked for the break so that people would dance. When hip-hop's influence spilled into soul music and you have this era around the turn of the century when the queen of neo-soul Angie Stone sampled the start "Backstabbers" by O'Jays and turned it into "I Wish I Didn't Miss You", she was keeping it right. Ashanti's first big single was "Foolish", which sampled El Debarge's Stay With Me, not long after it was used by Notorious B.I.G. for One More Chance. I love that tune; she (and Irv Gotti and 7 Aurelius) kept it right.
