Shoot Marino could probably break 70 TD passes in today's game, with the protections QBs and offenses get? Maaannnn.... ....That is, provided he had some receivers and a half-decent running game to support him. But based on his past, it probably wouldn't affect him either way...

Athletes today are stronger, quicker and more professional about there conditioning and health than those athletes from many decades earlier and that is a fact. That out of the way first. The thing people casually overlook is that all players from any era play the game as the rules, regulations and culture dictate FROM THAT ERA. When you compare one era to another it's like they are two different games.... because they are two different games. So, some successful athlete from yesteryear is going to do just fine in today's game smoking a half pack a day and partying every second night during the playing season? Yeah, we know, the QB's got it easy now. But QB's back then also didn't have to face the caliber of Cornerbacks and other position players that are much more skilled and tactical than they were back then. In other words, it is silly to take these sorts of comparisons seriously because it is like comparing apples to oranges.

And on the flipside, the past QBs would have access to more favorable passing rules, possibly more explosive athletes (especially at TE) and playcalling centered around airing it out. A lot of confused defenses due to the time off from the player's strike going against the most well oiled machine of an offense at the time. Add in 'HoF of the HoF' talent at QB and WR1 and voila. You'll never see a WR average almost 2 TD catches a game again. Everyone doubles a teams #1 and in the redzone that double becomes a bracket triple coverage.

I'd argue the athleticism point is irrelevant. Especially when discussing great players. All the great offensive players of the past would have outrageous numbers today. That's like saying the difference between a small burger and a big burger is irrelevant. Obviously theres a difference. The conditioning and training regimens back then were miles behind where we are now. Players are bigger, stronger, and faster than they were then. Techniques have had decades longer to be mastered. It's like Wilt Chamberlain if he said he could dominate in today's NBA, no, he would get smacked around. He was miles above everyone else in his era physically and mentally, but everyone has caught up since then. But none of this is to disparage people in that era, you have to look at different eras as they are, separately. Theres no comparing the two.

Gurly was done after 6 seasons, Levon bell done after 6 seasons, todays RB doesn’t last because the athletes are bigger, stronger and faster, and let’s not even get into the technology that allows teams to practice better and scout and study film so much better than the 80s

So many people fail to understand that major changes were made to the passing game in 1994. Roughing the passer changes, radio transmitters in helmets, not being able to jam receivers more than 5 yards downfield, etc. Drew Bledsoe set the single game pass attempts record with 70 that season with the new changes. Another change that hampered Marino and Elway for 10 years was not being able to throw the ball away out of bounds like everyone does today. That was intentional grounding. You couldn't just chuck the ball to the sidelines or way out of the back of the end zone. Elway and Randall Cunningham in particular took a ton of unnecessary sacks because of that rule. Instead of just flinging it out of bounds they had to either try to run forward and get hit or run it to the sideline and step out of bounds for a loss. That's pretty much Russell Wilson's entire skill set right there out the window. He makes a living working sideline to sideline and throwing the ball away when nothing is there. Imagine the wear and tear on his body if he wasn't able to do that? Brees, Brady, Manning all got to take advantage of those rule changes their entire careers, not to mention latter changes made to keep them from getting injured. Marino averaged 3 TD's and 300+ yards a game without those rule changes in 1984! Jerry Rice had 22 TD's in 12 games (player's strike) in 1987 and his most yards ever at age 33 in 1995 with 1,848 (broken 17 years later in 2012 by Calvin Johnson at age 27). Those two guys were the best to ever do it. Rice's career records are untouchable even with all the changes. Marino would be the all-time yardage & TD leader if he played now.

Actually no. They're saying the NFL neutered defenses and it's easier to play offense nowadays. And there's an element of truth to that. Yeah they're way overinflating themselves, but they are correct in the assumption that as an offensive player their stats would be slightly inflated from back then. Certainly not gonna double their stats like they claim. But I could see Jerry averaging 2 more touchdowns a season, Bo putting up top 3 RB numbers each season if he focused on football, and I could see dan taking a run at the TD record.
