It is Ajahn Chah’s book “ Taste Of Freedom” that made me quest for truth of life and engage in the practice of the Noble 8 fold path by first establishing Samadhi and leading to Vipassana! Constantly striving thereafter, to cleanse my own defilements! Even co-written a movie script and want to credit to the Teacher if funded after the pandemic! In Deepest Gratitude to the enlightened Venerable! 🙏🙏🙏

Hey Jason, what you ask has informed much of if not all of my life since I first met him 1971. He was a master of his trade, which was to help humanity wake up. Wake up to their inheritance of Dhamma. Not to search externaly but to look within. For the living embodiment of his teachings go to his branch monasteries where there are still those who spent significant time with him. Ajahn Sumedho who is not readily accessible although I got wind of an open style retreat at Amaravati in England in 2017 not a sure thing. Ajahn Pasanno at Abhayagiri in Northern California, among the best in my humble view. Ajahn Viradhammo at Tisarana in Ontario Canada. For a more extensive look go to forestsangha.org/community/monasteries where there's a list of his monasteries throughout the world. And if you're up for it get to Thailand and his first monastery Wat Nong Pah Pong in Ubon Province and the entire Thai Forest Tradition with other Masters still living. Many blessings for your journey of discovery and enlightenment. Metta, Joseph

Joseph Kappel You were very amazing translator at time, Joseph. Unbelievable that you could remember almost all words Ajarn Chah said and so long some time but you transalated all words what he said exactly. How could you do that? Thank you very much for your great translation and also feel grateful. It's the first time for me to hear Ajarn Chah's voice. Best Regards, Annie

Does consciousness continue to exist after physical dead has occurred ? What is the best time period of the day to practice meditation?
@CrStrifey
@CrStrifey 7 жыл бұрын
Naropa Ananda Can I recommend you pick up a copy of the Majjhima Nikaya - The Middle Length Discourses of The Buddha. Not sure if English is your first language, but it has a lot of teachings about questions you might have. In monasteries the daily schedule usually has a meditation at 5 in the morning and one at 7pm. I'm not sure if there is really a best time period though.
@TheApatheticGuy
@TheApatheticGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Whether someone tells you if consciousness transcends death or not, you'll be listening to hearsay because you don't know it for yourself yet. The best time to meditate is whenever you can. One can meditate while walking, standing, sitting, or laying down. Being mindful of what you're doing all day long is the main meditation practice. Sitting on the cushion and watching the breath is only one part.

@@TheApatheticGuy upon death conciousness take new form immediately. That is why the BUDDHA say upon death, birth takes place immediately. How to start neditation? First find a teacher then put trust in that teacher then listen and pay attention to his teaching : First close your eye use mind to scan the tip of your toe slowly bring it up to the whole body till the top of your head. Scan a few times up and down. Then start direct focus on your breath. Breath naturally. Breath in we say rising, breath out we say falling continue in this way If any thoughts arise just let it come and just let it pass. Do not feel bad about it Just continue focus back to your breath. After some time the breath will become settled and become calm. If the mind become agitated, you can take deep breath a few times and until the agitation vanish, then continue back to normal breathing. What ever come into the mind and when you know that is also a kind of mindfulness.It will come by itself and it will pass away by itself. Just remember to return your focus to your breath. As your keep refocus back to your breath the breath also will change shorter or longer and the bresth will refine and subtle and gradually will disappear. This is the time you are in samadhi. It doesn't matter how many times the thoughts comes and go just renember to bring it back to focus on your in and out breath. In this way you are constantly practicing mindfulness and training the mind to be quiet. As we developed this practice we realised two factors in operation and they are sati(mindfulnes and clear comprehention (sampanjanna). When sati and clear comprehension are established, wisdom will arise to join sati and clear comprehension. Mindful +1 contemplation =wisdom

One who experience it will know. That means one at the lowest saint(SOTOPANNA) will know. It has been known by one who is awaken. All explaination are known to one who is awaken. In cutting short the whole explaination are known to one who is awaken. To let other understand the significance of the training of mind purification in simple explaination is be as watcher, not being entertain, not to be involve in all mind and physical activities. But to be a watcher, knowing the mind and physical activities as they arise so shall they disappear, knowing what to watch and knowing what not to watch just letting these body and physical phenomenor go. They are only passing clouds and nothing more of any good. By being in this way one need something to hang on while travelling into the mind and that we need are the meditation object Our breath and to magnify that breath so as to make it easy to feel and see it with the mind, we contemplate it on the abdomen or our belly. It is to make it become visible both physically and mentally so as one can feel it and mentally see it. In this way, one journey into the mind can begin. Clear comprehension on this breath object as one breath in (abdominal wall rising) and as one breath out(abdominal wall falling). By focusing the mind on this meditation object and contemplate it clearly, one will soon brings the mind into concentration that are very benefiting to on going mind purification development and to further progress that arouse vipasanna knowledge that will arise and to be known and realise by this way of pratice. The 16 vipasana nanas or knowledge will arise from clear mental comprehension(sampanjanna) on the meditation object. To cut short all those long meditaion mind purification explaination and to make it simple for everyone to understand, i will put it this way... Meditation is the process to experience the truth of this body and mind are not self and they are impermanent, are subject to sufferring. The above simple meditation instruction are merely to guide one into clear comprehension(sampanjanna) on the breath object so as to make the mind calm(sati) and once the mind are calm(sati or become concentrated) knowledge of the 3 characteristic and the 5 mental factor buddhist call it 5 khandas will be notice by the mind. In realising these phenomenor by this way of practice(vipasanna) one will finally comes to understand the 4 noble truth of sufferrings clearly. Clearly meaning one will directly experience the effect of the 4 noble truth. This means from scolarly to actual experience it. The actual experience is when one is now with clear comprehension on his meditation object and concentration has already momentarily developed(sati), once these 2 factors are developed, another factors will arise and that is vipasanna nanas or knowledge arise that from right concentration in buddhist we call it 'WISDOM'. These wisdom will only arise in the mind once sati or concentration are well developed following above explainations.. Once this knowledge or wisdom had arise as one continue to practice vipasanna, it will come to a time when the mind experience the last truth of the 4 noble truth= ceesation of conciousness into complete cease. The mind goes into complete shut down. This is how one who has finally completely understood the 4 noble truth explain it(from scolarly to really experience it) The moment of complete cease of conciousness one will not know. (it sound strange to you and many other because you have not yet tasted this moment. As the Lord BUDDHA say... COME AND EXPERIENCE IT YOURSELF. NIBANNA IS TO BE EXPERIENCE IT YOURSELF ONLY THEN YOU WILL KNOW. So when one who has experience it tell this momentarily cease of concious completely and that upon that moment he do not know it will definately make you think how is that possible right? So then who is right? The buddha is right and the one experience it is right. And you cannot understand we do not blame you. Why? Refer to the BUDDHA INVITATION: COME AND EXPERIENCE IT YOURSELF THEN YOU WILL KNOW. So you have heard the BUDDHA say in this way and now you have also hear the one who experience it say in the same way. Can you understand? Yes for those who are already experiece it they the ARIYA will understand. And for those still cannot understand, i urge you to deligently continue to practice VIPASANNA. This is the only way and no two ways. BUDDHAM SARANAM GACCHAMI

Joseph Kappel seems to have been the abbot who, in Ajahn Brahm's story, forced a young monk, after a whole sleepless night spent in meditation with the rest of the Sangha, to wash his robes instead of finally taking a rest, whilst all the others finally went to get some sleep. It seems to have been a very ugly and nasty way to exert your power as abbot, something even the nastiest CEO in a corporation would have refrained from doing. It seems above all as far removed from compassion as can be.
@andyc6439
@andyc6439 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know that story, but it sounds like a strict method of teaching, reserved only for the monks considered strong enough to handle it. Lots of other abbots have used, and continue to use, similar methods for training. One story pops into my mind, and I can't remember the context etc., but Ajahn Chah kicked one of his disciples in the chest as he was getting a foot massage from him, simply because the disciple had lost his mindfulness. Ajahn Chah could be fierce, but only in the pursuit of awakening those he was fierce towards. I recommend reading Still Flowing Water, if you're interested, an in depth biography written by Ajahn Jayasaro.
@paulwilliams8168
@paulwilliams8168 5 жыл бұрын
@@andyc6439 I know that story; the disciple was Ajahn Nyanadhammo (I saw a video of him recounting it, and then also read it in the biography of Ajahn Chah that you refer to) The reason he kicked him one evening is that in the morning A Nyanadhammo was unhappy when he went on almsround because of some other monk, and then when Ajahn Chah smiled at him and said 'good morning' he became very happy hat his teacher had spoken to him in such a kind way. So in the evening Ajahn Chah kicked him to surprise him and teach him that he should be happy independently of how other people behaved towards him. That's a reasonable teaching IMO; the behaviour I was referring to above, on the other hand, seems just like a nasty way to exert power.
@paulwilliams8168
@paulwilliams8168 5 жыл бұрын
@@andyc6439 PS Also, I think it's useful to remember that Ajahn Chah was pretty unique, Joseph Kappel was an ex soldier who became a monk for a while and then disrobed, I do not think it's meaningful to compare the former to the latter.
@andyc6439
@andyc6439 5 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean, but I think that the only way to transcend desire is to frustrate it. If a monk is really really desiring to go to bed and get some rest, and that need is frustrated for a while longer, then that can be a useful teaching, especially if his robes were in poor condition. It depends on Ajahn Pabhakaro's motivation, I suppose. Whether it came from a place of compassion, and was exercised upon a monk who could handle such tough love (but there are worse things than being kept up all night...). Pabhakaro, as well, was not just a monk for a while, he was a monk of very high standing, the one time abbot of Nanachat and the monastery in Northumbria, and was very close to Ajahn Chah for a long time, as I'm sure you know. He has also continued teaching in lay life, and there are any number of possible reasons for his disrobing, i.e. not necessarily that he couldn't hack it, or that the kilesas got the better of him.
@andyc6439
@andyc6439 5 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering how Ajahn Brahm relates the story... Does he intend to expose some vicious intent, or does he tell it as one of his trademark funny stories?

Do not let this human life be wasted. Not easy to be born as human. The buddha already tell us. Many after this life fail to be born in human and deva realm. Many fall into the 4 woeful realm. So plesse do not waste your human life. Strive for attainment and set it as your goal. Nibanna and the concious. Ceesation of mind and thus body ceases to be. Nibanna do not need mind or body. The last noble truth that explain about the end of sufferring. One who experience the last truth sees it clearly. Mind ceases altogather. Nibanna the unexplainable. That is the ULTIMATE TRUTH
