“Live To Tell” is about trauma. The tale she has to tell, which is so hard to hide is one of an abusive past. People lie, she’s hiding the secret and the pain & she hopes she lives to tell it all. She’s experienced happiness (beauty) once and it resides inside her, and the person who traumatized her can’t touch the light inside. It’s a VERY powerful song when you realize what it’s really about. Listen to it again with these themes in mind and it takes on much more weight. It’s one of her best, in my opinion. The “pseudo continuation” of this song and its theme is a song on Like A Prayer called “Oh Father”…check it out!
