This is the best description of childhood I have ever heard. Children are violent, unintentionally (sometimes intentionally) cruel, little scientists. Nobody admits to metaphorically "microwaving" a gerbil, or "killing" their neighbors, but we've all done it at one point or another when growing up.

Lot's of people seem confused by the lyrics here. As a kid that grew up in a trashy small town environment though, I know *exactly* what this song is all about. It's a perfect journey through the mind of a hyperactive 11 year old stuck in a dumpy suburbs, influenced by peer pressure and the increasing presence of media. At least, that's what I get from it.

HEAR HEAR. Born and raised in Iowa, diagnosed at a YOUNG age with ADHD, this song is my childhood. From getting picked on and paying it forward 10x, from being good enough to be called sweet and acting bad enough to be arrested before age 12 to hotwired thoughts and highpower anxiety inducing bizarre/erratic behavior, having a moral compass spinning 100rpm, all I can say is I set it off like microsoft in '94 in my back yard. It's a miracle I didn't kill a kid and it's a miracle those kids didn't kill me.

This song feels like remembering the dreams you had as a kid about running away to a better life while sitting on your bed in your childhood home and realising that will never happen. And yet, the faint, bitter memory of the time when you still had hope for the future helps you fall asleep

GETTING NAKED AND PLAYING WITH GUNS (ALTERNATE) LYRICS [Chorus] Getting naked and playing with guns There's a gerbil in the microwave A baseball bat in everyone Sharing kisses and building a bomb We'll set it off like Microsoft in '94 We'll set it off like Microsoft in '94 [Verse 1] McDonalds PlayPlace before the Xbox Cake frosting, sweet talking bedroom wall Covered in knives, touching God, burning shit We'll make a wish and take a trip to Future Town Like our daddy did And we'll kill the neighbor kid Who only wants to be our friend His dad is dead enough that His new dad can cure the bends We'll make a wish and take a trip to Future Town Feeling weird, yet tasting sweet It's a top-bottom, rock-smoking, magic mask Making it bleed Feeling sweet, getting weird Now I can see the playground through the trees And I can see the playground from the trees [Verse 2] And we'll show the neighbor kid What our love actually means He's here from out of town and I heard he's got A.D.D We'll climb the tallest branch with a rifle full of dreams And we'll blow the little dickweed up to smithereens [Chorus] Getting naked and playing with guns There's a gerbil in the microwave A baseball bat in everyone Sharing kisses and building a bomb We'll set it off like Microsoft in '94 We'll set it off like Microsoft in '94 We'll set it off like Microsoft in '94 In our backyard

This song is so odd to me. I was never nearly like this as a kid, even figuratively, but it feels so nostalgic. The violence of the lyrics with the soft instrumental sets a tone in my mind where even if that's not me at all, I get it. Like hell yeah, microwaving gerbils

@ezrablock32189 жыл бұрын
+Trevor Manzine I know that this type of song isn't for everyone, but to me, this song is much stronger because it has so much metaphor. It evokes a vaguely nostalgic sense in me, but still has the morbidity to remind me of how dangerous my own childhood could be. I'm happy that the band has evolved, and I prefer whole songs full of metaphors, than some of the ones where they had mostly literal and a few metaphors. Its your opinion and I don't expect you to gain a better appreciation for the song from my comment, but I think it's important to note that what is meaningless to one person, is evocative to another.
