@@TDR85yes, a pretty drastic one. Before AJOVY, I was experiencing about 28 sharp headaches a month with massive daily head pressure and dizziness. After AJOVY, maybe 2 sharp headaches a month. It did however not cure or help my head pressure or dizziness but over all still a huge win in my book. I have not noticed any side effects as well. Funny not funny part: the first shot I gave myself took over 6 hours to do because I was so chicken 💩 about it, hence the view and comment on this video. I’m proud to say I just gave myself another shot yesterday and had it done and over with within a minute. Literally zero pain!

Just picked up my 3rd dose and it’s official, I feel like a pro now. Zero hesitation when injecting myself. I’ve had pretty significant relief and zero side effects from this drug thus far so I’m so excited to continue taking it. I do still have the head pressure and dizziness, but hey, less headaches is a huge step in the right direction.

Aww I relate so much to this! When I saw you too nervous to do it, I was like, "It's okay!" It's totally okay to be freaked out. I am beginning Ajovy, tonight. I was on Emgality for a year. It took about eight months for me to stop delaying it for hours every time due to so much anxiety. Thank you for posting this. I feel like I have a better idea of what to expect. I suffer with migraines majority of my life. I tried so many medications. The Veterans Affairs finally said they will send me to a neurologist. I'm waiting for the appointment and see what they tell me. I'm nervous!! I felt so anxious for you when you were getting ready for the dose.

I hate that you've had Migraine for such a long time and tried so many medications. I also have tried a lot. I really hope that the neurologist appointment can be scheduled soon. There are 4 medications in this class of medications and it often depends on insurance, which one you are prescribed. Let me know how it goes!

Following your suggestion to let it sit for 24 hours…. And after much self talk I did it and it was not painful at all. Did it for the first time and I’m confident that next month will be a breeze. I take Ajovy too, first time I did it together with a nurse, still have a hard time doing it since I'm afraid of needles. All I did to get me over that fear is think about the migraines. The worst months are where you don't get breaks from the pain.

Thanks so much. I had this pretty much figured out from the instructions, but it was so helpful for you to walk through the process and demonstrate how to be both anxious but courageous. Your example inspired me to share the experience: rather than white-knuckle my way through my first ever self-injection, I had my wife sit with me and I explained the procedure and she watched the plunger go down and so forth. To me, the needle almost didn't didn't feel much worse than lightly poking a pen into my thigh. I almost couldn't believe it worked and had to inspect the blue plunger again and look at my totally dry thigh to see that there was no where else that the medicine could have gone but into my leg, LOL. As they say, your mileage may vary -- the sharpness of the needle can be variable and so the next time it might hurt more. But you helped me get over the hurdle of the first injection. Now to wait for the medication to take effect and reduce the migraine symptoms . . . Thanks again, and God bless you!

@@michaelgreene4816 Hi! The thing is that everyone’s brain responds to medications in general differently and vastly differently to CGRPs. I have many friends with chronic migraines and we have all responded to these medications differently. Some have had no help. And some have had lots of help. Personally, Ajovy decreased my severity and frequency of Migraine some. But after a certain period of time, it stopped working and I have had to switch to other CGRP inhibitors. THe only way you will know if this works for you and how it will work for you is trying it yourself. I have people who are genetically related to me who have tried these medications and reacted differently than I did. I wish you the best on your journey! Keep me updated on how it goes for you.

Just finished giving myself mine for the first time! Your video helped a lot and I had to video chat my partner for moral support. 😅😂 it stung like fire for me but only about 6 to 10 seconds and then no pain at all! I bled a little but nothing terrible. And the needle isn't what hurts its tiny it's just the medicine that stung super bad, but it is so short lived that its fine. And it doesn't linger like a tetanus shot or anything

@elizabethw.454 Medications- especially Migriane medications work very differently for each person. Our brains are so different. Some migraine meds work for my mom that don’t for me. Just keep that in mind when asking how the med worked for others. Just bc something works/doesn’t work for someone else doesn’t mean it will be the same for you.💜

Thank you. If you follow the directions, it is pretty rare that the meds would come back out unless you pull the needle out while it is injecting. And don’t push on the injection site after you’ve given yourself the medication. Maybe you can work yourself up to it. I believe in you! But if you arent’ able to, that is okay too. Sometimes we need others to help us and that is okay.

Saw my neurologist and he said my nerves were forming a knot in the back of my neck, causing the intense migraines “rams horn” So every 3 and 1/2 months, I go and get shots to make the nerves ‘straighter’ so to speak. I've done 4 now and I will say my 4th one was a little less painful and what I did differently was I held the pen in my hand for a little while right before injecting (of course after it was already room temp) to get it to actual body temperature. It did help! Maybe the previous 2 were too cold and first one I had so much adrenaline from it being the first time I ever did it that it wasn't as painful? Not sure but I'm working on it! Either way, I use your confidence in how you just went for it every time I do it. It honestly upsets me so much every time I do it. It's still new to me. I've never gotten injections other than occasional vaccines, much less given myself one. I really hate doing these. They hurt so bad. I'm hopeful that the warming up with my hand trick will help!

Oh no- that is rough that the other injections have been so painful. Way to go with problem solving and trying to warm it up. TBH, the autoinjector was really painful for me as well after this video. I asked my dr to prescribe the Ajovy prefilled syringe instead. Have you looked into that/asked your dr about it? I have a video on my opinion of which is better the prefilled syringe or the autoinjector and show both. Top reason I like the prefilled syringe is bc its not painful! I'll link my video just in case you are curious. I also have a video on giving myself an injection of the pre-filled syringe. I have so much anxiety with teh autoinjector but zero with the pre-filled syringe. Way to go on doing the injections! 💪🏻 Injections are hard and when they hurt it is really rough. I can see why it'd be hard when you are new to it - most people are. Years ago when I first started giving myself injections, I'd pass out every time! So it gets better with time - at least the anxiety improves. If you stick with the auto-injector I hope that the hand warming trick continues to help. Anything I can help you with? If you leave the medication out of hte fridge for a couple hours before administering it, that can help with the pain if there is any. You can also have an ice pack ready, so that if it does hurt, you can gently apply the ice pack which can numb that temporary pain - just don’t push on the injection site so you don’t push the medication out. Any pain I’ve ever had from it is temporary - less than 30 seconds. You can do it!! Rooting for you.

I used to do the autoinjector amd the first time it took me almost 2 hours to psych myself up to do it that I had to have my husband do it. It just felt to like intimidating. I just started the pre filled syringe today and man what a world of a difference. I was able to do it almost right away

Hi, I am from Argentina and I was taking Aimovig but I have a rejection with muscle spasms. My doctor wants to try Ajovy. Why did you change your medication? Does Ajovy work the same as Aimovig? Thank you!

I'm sorry to hear about the muscle spasms. I changed medication because my insurance would not cover Aimovig any longer. Ajovy and Aimovig are in the same class of medications: CGRP inhibitors. One of them works directly on the nerve receptors and the other works on the molecules themselves. So they are a little different. Let me know how the Ajovy works for you. I'm hoping for no reactions!

I have a new GP and he has given me a prescription for the Pen device. I’m not sure what I think about it. I am used to self injecting and was concerned at how the pen worked. I’m sure I will feel just like you did in this video when I first administer my next treatment. Having watched this however I’m sure it will have made it easier. Thanks heaps for doing this. I'm so glad this video was helpful for you! I only know about the US, but you should be able to get the prefilled syringe that you were getting before. Sometimes doctors prescribe the autoinjector by default and all you have to do is let them know that you prefer the pre-filled syringe injection. The very next injection, I went back to the pre-filled syringe - my doctor had prescribed the auto-injector (pen device) by default and I *much* prefer being in control of the injection. All I had to do was to call his office and ask if he would prescribed the pre-filled syringe (non autoinjector) for the next administrtion. Let me know how it goes!

I hope this works for you. I took Ajovy for 3 months, but on the 3rd month I started having very heavy period bleeding. Told my doctor who said it wouldn't cause heavy bleeding. Went online found other women who had same issue after 3 months. Finally found a doctor who agreed that she had heard similar stories. I am now taking Quilipta which is helping. They say to take it everyday, but I only take it when a migraine starts. It's pretty good. It is expensive but the doctor can get you a savings card and I pay nothing for 2 years. Sorry for the book. Hope all the best for you! Oh, side note. When giving myself an injection which terrified me, icing my leg first for about 20 minutes cuts the pain drastically! : )

I've been taking Ajovy for 11 months and the only side effect I experience is a mild itchiness at the injection site for about one day. I do highly recommend icing the injection site for 5 minutes before and after the injection though. Good luck to your wife!

Hi Mark. Sorry for the delay in response - my health has been poor. I haven't done a follow up video on this med. I tend not to do videos about medications and how they help/don't help. In my experience in the migraine community the last 17 years, it isn't helpful because all our brains are very different in how we respond to meds. What may work for your wife may not work for me and visa versa. I've never had side effects to Ajovy, but some people have. I think it is individual due to brain chemistry. I can say I've been on Ajovy for a long time and it has made a difference in my Migraines. I would be much worse without it. I hope the medication goes well for your wife! Let me know how it goes.

I can understand not liking being able to see the needle. That is why I prefer the prefilled syringe bc I can see the needle and control things more. I'm not exactly sure why the medication has to be refrigerated. Per the package insert, can be out of the fridge and used for 7 days before it has to be discarded, so I really don't know why, but it is!

I can understand being afraid. You are going to do great!! I'll be cheering for you. Sometimes I play music when I do an injection to calm me down or pump me up depending on my bood. I think the Ajovy stings more, the Aimovig didn't but I did only leave it out for 30 minutes, so next time I will take it out of the fridge that morning! I also preferred the prefilled syringe.

I've been doing it since 2007, so I've had time to get used to it. When I first started giving myself IM injections, I would pass out every time. I was SO freaked out and didn't want to do it AT ALL! But when you need it, you figure out a way. I used to play music to help me give myself injections. But it's definitely still hard. I give myself a Vitamin B12 IM injection every other week and I still hate it.

So far I have tried emgality, amovig and now ajovy. Ajovy autoinjector is the one that hurts the least, and yes, it is weird not to have a trigger, but you get used to it. I find that with the CGRP meds, after sometime, the benefits kind of wear off. Hopefully this time works better with Ajovy. Thank you for your video.

I also find that I have to bounce between CGRPs. I was on Aimovig for 9 months and then it wore off and I went to Ajovy for 18 months. And then back to Aimovig until my insurance wouldn't cover it and I've been on Ajovy for a while and I think I may need to move to a different one again as Iv'e had a migraine practically every day this month. Its weird.

Everyone's brain responds differently to medications. So what I may have responded to may not have been helpful for you. Aimovig and Ajovy were equally helpful for me. I'm currently on Vyepti (also in this class of medications) and that has been the best for me.

Every person will respond differently to these medications. In the studies, about 50% of people found 50% reduction of their migraines from CGRP inhibitors. About 30% found 25% reduction in their migraines. And there are peopel who found 100% reduction. Out of all the classes of medications, these meds including Ajovy have been the only ones to affect my migraine disease. I am taking another medication in this class of medications called Vyepti. FOr me, Ajovy will help some for a good while and then stop working bc antibodies build up in my system adn I have to switch to something else adn tehn I can switch back. I believe in you. I know that doing an injection can seem daunting, but you can do it. Just take one step at a time and make sure to breathe through it. I will sometimes play music to help me get through an injection or give myself a reward after doing it. I'm rooting for you! Let me know how it goes!

The needle is not bad at all..some advice I learned the hard way though..after you fo your alcohol swab prep, let the area dry completely before using the injector, otherwise, it will sting like crazy from the alcohol 😭 That was the only time I was cussing myself, literally 😄 Good luck 🥰

Like someone mentioned in a previous comment, my pharmacist suggested icing the injection site for 5 minutes before the injection and for 5 minutes after the injection. I don't know why, but I still get a little anxious before each injection...and then, low and behold, it NEVER hurts. LOL. Mind you, I inject into my belly fat. I tried my thigh once and that stung a little bit - but still, hardly at all and only for a brief minute.

Thank you for the excellent information/instructions. My Neurologist recently gave me a sample, but no instructions? I used Aimovig twice, but it caused an elevation in blood pressure. My “go to” rescue med for migraines is Nurtec ODT, but because I’m having 15-20 migraines a month my health care provider recommended Ajovy and the Nurtec. After reading some “side effects” comments on your channel, I’m having second thoughts. Having fewer migraines would be nice, but side effects are dangerous. Anyway, that’s my decision to make. How strange he didn't give you instructions! I'm glad that the video was helpful for you. I truly hope that the Ajovy helps if you choose to try it. Remember everyone is different and reacts to medications very differently because our brain chemistry is different. My mom also has bad Migraines and we react very differently to medications. Also- usually the people who are talking online about medications are the ones who had bad experiences with it. People who do well, don't usually take the time to comment. They are getting on with their lives. For what it's worth, I've not had side effects from Ajovy. Medication is always a risk. Have you tried any alternative/complementary treatments for Migraine? Traditional acupuncture, biofeedback, ect? If you haven't - it might be a good route to consider if you are still wearing of taking medication for migraine.

@@xSheravenx thank you for your reply. I’m now on Losartan 25mg for Labile hypertension and ALL of the migraines are gone. Being worked up for pituitary issues; possible secondary hypertension. Looks like the years of frequent severe headaches were related to blood pressure in the 170-200/90-110 range.

I know people who have taken this medication and all of their migraines were gone. I know people who this medication didn't help at all. I’ve just been given the ajovy. I’ve been on emgality but you can’t it here till April . It’s a shortage. I hate new injections as my anxiety through the roof. It’s sitting in front of me and I’ve got all kind of thoughts going through my head. Doesn’t help the MIGRIANE . Your video is very helpful. Did it help your migraine? Emgality works pretty good. I'm sorry that the Emgality is not available until April. Are you in Australia? I believe I heard of a shortage there. I can understand getting anxiety from injections. Ajovy did help the migraine for me. I would imagine the Ajovy would be similar (injection-wise) to the Emgality. Oh my gosh thank u! I think having it out longer is better too. And my insurance denied me getting emgality, which I was on four going on five years. It was much easier to use. So angry that they get to dictate to me what medication I should put into my body! I did my first injection today and I didn’t do it correctly. Medicine continued to come out I do not think I got the full dose. Did it in my belly because I thought it wouldn’t hurt as much. I am so bruised now. I can’t imagine pressing it into my muscle in my leg. Emgality had a button to push which basically did all the work. Ajovy I actually have to push it in do not like!! This is all because of the lack of freedom we have with insurance. I feel for u I had the same hesitation! I do not like the way Ajovy works. 😢

I agree it is so frustrating that insurance gets to say which med we get over us adn our doctors! I'm sorry the injection didn't go well and that the medicine kept coming out. Remember that the injection only goes skin deep, so it isn't going to actually go into your leg muscle if you were to do it there. I prefer the button to none as well. I hope that administering the ajovy will get easier over time. If you haven't already, I'd let your doctor know about the concern you have with not getting the full dose of the med this time.

She makes it sound more difficult as it is. It's easy and I don't feel the needle anymore than I did with the Aimovig. Doc switched me from Aimovig because even after over one year, it really did not work sufficiently in preventing migraines. She seems to be afraid of needles, so she wasn't the best person to demonstrate an injection. If you have suffered from severe migraines for almost 50 years a little needle prick is nothing. I listened to the video because I thought she had some insight on the effectiveness of Aimovig versus Ajovy.

I’m glad it is not difficult for you. Autoinjectors are my nemesis and this is true to my experience. I find using a prefilled syringe much easier when it comes to CGRP inhibitors because I’m more comfortable with giving injections with a syringe/needle itself. I like the control. Not afraid of needles - Been giving myself injections for 2 decades and I have a port. I don’t do videos on my experience with the effectiveness of medications. In the migriane community, we are all so different in how our brain reacts to medications and we will all have vastly different experiences re: effectiveness and side effects. Please take caution when reading/hearing about other people’s experiences with medications - the majority of people who post online about medications are people who had trouble with them. So the discussion tends to be skewed. All the best with Ajovy. I hope it is more effective for you than the Aimovig was.

I noticed changes in migraine even after one injection. Im not alergic to anything that i know.. But sadly after second shot i had horrible reaction 😢 whole body was itching and burning, thought it would go away but after few weeks the injection part started to look horrible, i had some bruises on my body and all those areas became so sensitive and bumpy, I dont even what to imagine what could have happened if I had an open wound. Be very cautious of your body when you’re on this medication

Aimovig was FDA approved in May 2018 (Ajovy was after that), so there really isn't knowledge on what long term side effects could be. The possibility of long term side effects are certainly a risk that we are taking. Personally, it is a risk I was/am willing to take and one that my doctor and I discussed.

No CGRP inhibitors like Ajovy do not burn out the adrenals. Dr. Peter Goadsby, a leading migraine neurologist says, "CGRP stands for calcitonin gene-related peptide - an amino acid peptide that's found in the brain and in other parts of the body. It's a neurotransmitter chemical that the body makes and uses to transmit signals between nerves and blood vessels. In migraine, we see that CGRP is overexpressed - there’s too much of it. We’re now able to block CGRP." So basically, this medication works on the neurotransmitters in the nerves in the brain/nervous system and blocks them. It is believed that by blocking the CGRP, it helps control dilation of blood vessels and transmission of pain.

I just gave myself mine for the 1st time. The blue part didnt stay all the way down after it clicked it popped back up so not all the medicine went in me. It had alot on my skin. I kept pressure on it the whole time. I'm not sure why it didnt work right for me. I started out with the pre filled syringe and it seemed like it took to long to go in my skin. So my Dr switched me to the auto injector. I guess I need someone to help me do mine the next time.

I would speak to your pharmacist about what happened so that they know that you did not get the full dose and also to discuss the proper way of injecting. In my experience, there needs to be sufficient pressure on the autoinjector the whole time after it is pushed down. So sufficient pressure to keep the blue part down needs to continue through the second click and past the second click for the next 10 seconds (or however long the instructions say). I did not allow it pop back up until the clicks are done. Are you saying that the blue part forcibly pushed back up? If so, that would be an error with the injector and I would tell this to the pharmacist. The prefilled syringe does take a long time to inject because the needle is so tiny in gauge (circumfrence of the opening of the needle). It takes a while for the liquid to get through the tiny hole just like putting water through a smaller funnel will take longer than putting the same amount of water through a larger funnel.

I attempted to do the injection last Thursday. Followed directions perfectly. When I went to pull the cap off, the medicine flowed out like a fountain. I freaked out!!! Read on line that it possibly could be defected. Called up the company and they are replacing it. Now I’m freaking out just opening it, not giving the actual shot. Husband wants me to call the doctor and see if they can show me how to do it the first time.

Oh no, I’m so sorry that happened to you! Definitely must’ve been defective. Glad you got the company to replace it! It’s not common for that to happen, but I can see why you’d be freaked out to open it. I HATE the way they have the cap on the Aimovig auto-injector. They also have a prefilled syringe for Ajovy if you’d rather that instead. I’m going ot be putting out a video on that in the next couple weeks - the differences between the Ajovy auto-injector and hte Ajovy prefilled syringe (which I think is a lot easier). I tried emgality and it gave me more headaches than before (literally all day everyday) so they switched me to Ajovy. I have already done one dose last month. This is my second dose and I think I have had a malfunction. I don't remember the first time so I was hoping you could help me. When I pulled off the protective cap there was some metal and other stuff inside the cap (like in your video) that came out with the cap. I thought the first time the cap came off by itself. Did it work ok wothout the metal stuff? (Just so you know I had trouble the first time too, pressing it into myself)

Ack- I'm so sorry I wasn't able to respond to you right away. I'm recovering from surgery and its not so easy for me to focus to respond. The metal stuff in the big blue cap is holding the cap that was covering up the needle -protecting the needle before you use it.. So if I understand correctly what you are describing, the metal stuff it isn't integral in the injection at all. But, if you are still concerned or have concerns about your next injection, you can always talk to your pharmacist about it. They would be an excellent resource.

Interesting, perhaps because I have had an epi pen, and frankly my migraines have given me a pretty high pain tolerance, I’ve never minded. I stab myself in the thigh with full force and glee.

Oh good, I have the monthly ajovy but the injecting one which my son does for me.. and I never bleed.. so I thought I was dead.. or weird.

haha - it's okay not to bleed. If the needle doesn't hit a blood vessel you probably won't.

I messed up and accidentally eased up on the injector after the needle went in and the medicine spilled everywhere 😑😑 I didn’t realize I had to hold pressure on it

i asked pharmacist today how long to leave it out before using. she said "oh 3-4 minutes " and shrugged🤔

Interesting. I wonder if she has ever injected it herself. The injection is safe to be outside of the fridge for several days, so being out will not hurt it. But I've found its not so painful or painful at all if I let it get to room temp. I would usually leave it out for at least an hour.

I used my second Ajovy injector (I've used the syringes/shots before), and the second one was defective. When I removed the plastic protective cap, the ENTIRE injection mechanism came off! I've used Emgality injectors before and nothing like this has ever happened. After the end (including the injection mechanism) came off - the medicine shot into the air! Totally wasted! Very disappointed!

WOW! I have not heard of that happening! That is wild and extremely unfortunate. They should’ve replaced your Ajovy IMO bc taht was definitley a manufacture’s error! Those caps can be hard to remove. Thank you for sharing.

My insurance stoped paying for my aimovig so before I can do ajovy I have to try and fail emgality

Hmm. How much medication came out. Usually a little comes out for me after an injection, but not a lot. I would contact the doctor that prescribed the medication and tell him what happened.

From my understanding, it is extremely unlikely that a person will hit a vein with a subcutaneous injection. I have given myself well over 1000 injections in my lifetime and never hit a vein. However, if you are concerned, I would talk to your doctor or pharmacist about it and ask this exact question. Tell them you have this fear.

I'm sorry it burns. Might be something to tell your prescribing care provider. Have you tried leaving it out of the fridge for at least an hour before injection? That might help.

I think the answer will depend on who you ask. It works wonderfully for some people. It works terribly for other people. Our brains are all so different that a person’s response to it is very individual. I know many people in both categories of who it has helped and who it hasn’t. Personally, it helped me somewhat for a bit but then wore off and I had to move to another med in the same class.
