What a journey! Thank you for documenting it beautifully for generations to come. I had a set of 4 cassettes, i think, of his Thumris, which i played often. This much have been the early 90s. Watching this documentary was a wonderful experience.

A bright mind supported by unrelenting practice can help you acquire superb skills, but a Bade Ghulam Ali is as much a product of his environment and lived experience as he is of the above factors. Likewise, Ajoyji is also a product of his environment. Respect to the Pandit for his hard work but his music lacks aesthetic cohesion despite his great skill and insights. He is and will remain an imitator. A polished imitator, but an imitator nonetheless, with little of his own to say in this vast domain of khayal music. As someone else has pointed out, why don’t we hear of some of his good students like Shantanu Bhattacharya mentioned in the same breath as his daughter? Clearly our man is more interested in empire than actually producing serious classical performers.

Interestingly in the entire film, there is no mention about any of his successful vocal students except Kaushiki Ma’m. I doubt are thare any? Got reference of some instrumental students only. It is really a pity that after teaching thousands of vocal students for at least 30 years in Shrutinandan, Panditjee couldn’t find a single eligible student to showcase in his biopic. Otherwise a good film indeed.

I think Kaushiki is shown here as being a family member, his daughter... U'll see all family members are featured in this biopic: Guruma (his wife), Ananjan (his son), even Kaushiki's son and husband.... Talking of successful vocal students, there are plenty (and most importantly, u'll find their quality is top notch): Anol Chatterjee, Deborshee Bhattacharjee, Brajeshwar Mukherjee, Meher Paralikar, etc. Even his young student like Anubhab Khamaru sings with such dexterity that one could call him a performing artist already!

We must remember that for a 1 hr documentary about 50 hrs footage is shot - a lot fo things get cut in the editing process. this has nothing to do with Shri Ajoy or any artist involved - this decision is made by the director fo the film/docu

There is nothing in the world as "Raaga Music". Only " Raag Music" is there. The word 'Raaga' is the corrupt form of the Hindi, Urdu and Sanskrit word 'Raag'.

Panditji is here using the sanskrit format... Raaga (राग) is the sanskrit format (which can also be Raagam, रागं/रागम् or Raagah, रागः, when treated as a neutral noun). Transliteration of 'Raag' pronunciation in Sanskrit would be राग्, which is of course not how we spell it (here, it's just for transliteration's sake)... Other examples could be for instance, Raam or Raama, or, Sugriv or Sugriva; in sanskrit we don't pronounce it as Raam or Sugriv, but as Raama and Sugriva (although the Devanagari spelling may be same) [every syllable is pronounced in Sanskrit]

With due respect, the man is approaching 70. He is bound to be thinking about his legacy. He owes it to himself. Back in the day, when life expectancies were shorter in India (and worldwide too, I suppose), you would have shashtiabdipoorti or 60th birthday celebrations. You may well recall the story of Sawai Gandharva’s 60th birthday celebrations, where his disciples paid musical tribute to him and a young lad called Bhimsen Joshi made quite a splash. That's pretty much the way people _do stuff._ Bhimsen ji himself attended a book release for a book on himself by Mohan Nadkarni ('The Man and His Music') in 1983, meaning, he was around the same 'ripe old age' of 60. 60 is not that old anymore, with the more advanced medicine of today. 70 is perhaps the new 60. (Gosh, how cliché-sounding! XD) Bottom line: No one else will do advertizing for you. You gotta do it yourself. Today's classical musicians have their own KZbin channels and vlogs. Would we call that narcissistic? By 1980s standards, maybe. But not by today's standards. The world has changed a lot. Not necessarily for the better, of course, but it has.

And although I disagree with Ajoy's ceaseless self aggrandisement and promotion. I absolutely understand that, because Classical music is very bluntly speaking an unpopular genre of music, some level of shameless promotion is needed (as you rightly said compared to the yesteryears). Hell every classical musician does it nowadays. It's just that this Pandit is on a level which seems a lot more obvious and almost bellicose in his brand of self promotion. But I get where you're coming from. 😇👍🏻

I would never compare him to the almost saintly humility that Bhimsen Joshi possessed, I've never heard Bhimsen ever refering to someone praising himself, like this man often has. Ajoy Chakraborty's humility very honestly subjectively speaking, to me comes off as artificial and people pleasing. But, if you disagree I'd absolutely understand 👍🏻.

In this matter, I must confess ignorance as to the exact details of the lives of any of the musicians we mentioned. How humble someone was and how justified that was is probably something I haven’t yet given much thought about. But again, generally speaking, narcissism seems to be a trait almost inseparable from humanity. On a different note, I would wager that this tendency has only been exacerbated via social media. Whether it is for good or bad, again, remains to be seen. I am never a fan of an excess of narcissism for the record. ;) Any-who. Hope you’re doing fine, @DC!
