Mephits amuse me. In much the same way as some folks use Imps and Quasits as familiars, I've often wondered if casters of a more elemental bent could summon a Mephit into this role, or if it would be adking too much? Not to take a jab, but I have to note that this video mentions upcoming Spelljammer content, which we did get...four years later.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that mephit is essentially the same word as imp, just in a different language, perhaps Hebrew as opposed to Saxon. Imp means “cutting, spawn” as in how you propagate and graft plants.

The first place I ever heard of mephits was EverQuest. So called "Nightmare Mephits" found in the Plane of Nightmare definitely fit the description of having a "Pathological need to annoy the hell out of other beings"

Cant help thinking of a weird version of the Storm-light Archives spren. They are supposedly manifestations of human emotions and states of being like glory, anger, pain, death, etc... Not a direct correlation but could be a cool addition if playing a game like that,

To some extent I feel like these things are like living emoji. For a powerful primordial god being, creating living things as a form of symbolic language would make some kind of strange sense. And something they could do.

Remember that elementals are not technically seperate entities. They can and do just merge seemlessly. So it is more accurate to see a mephit as an autonomous thought fired off towards the one you wish to express that thought to. It really shows how immense these elemental powers are that they can just fling and disgard these things without concern as they must be able to regain what they lost almost as soon as it is gone. And that they do not care how long it takes for these minions to return to the greater elemental union. So while it is natural for us to see them as their own living entity this is not how elementals work in the slightest. It is not alive and is not really seperate from the entity that created it. More like a miniature version of their creator that happens to currently have different experiences. Eventually it will be reabsorbed back into its creator. And yes, their creator is not alive either. That is something that is very odd about elementals. They may be conscious but they are not alive. It is why elementals do not really fathom how living beings work. To them seperating and recombining over and over again is natural. Gaining and losing their own unique perspective is just part of their ever changing existence. Nothing traumatic about it to them to be their own being one day and the next being gulped up by a greater being.

thanks for all the inspiring ideas! I had a couple of ideas for minions and/or npcs in my campaigns: first an ice or sludge mephit that is costantly depressed( see Marvin the paranoid android )and whining "here i am, created by primordial entities, witnessed the birth of gods and fiends ..and now my only duty is to hold the grimoire of a snotty teenage wizard..what a life..", that could be hilarious to roleplay. Second idea is an incredibly old mephit that has served hundreds of masters, maybe even some famous ones like Vecna in his archmage days,who knows the tricks of the trade by heart. I see that with two variations : a power beyond the throne, a grey eminence pulling the strings of a BBEG or even a good npc - " yes,yes master that's a great plan, spawned by a great mind...perhaps though, in the majestic scale of your utter brilliance, there are some small itsy bitsy details you overlooked.." proceeding to tell him the real plan. Or it could go in a complete opposite directions, like a Iago from Aladdin minion: through sheer luck and incredible incompetence manages to survive for millenias, bringing doom to every master he follows, all the while snickering and making dark jokes, often at the expenses of their master. Doing a Gilbert Gottfried voice would be a welcomed bonus

Yeah, there are Radiant Mephits, the Shadow Mephits can be more necrotic if need be, and there could be something like an undead mephit, though, they are elemental beings, so, it would be a different sort of Undeath than the biological creatures of the Material Planes.

Honestly hearing about the Primordials and the mephits, most of all how the Primordials use them to communicate between themselves. It makes me think that they could both be used in a lovecraftian like campaign, I mean what is more alien an greater than a primordial to a human. Maybe in a campaign you could make it that some researcher finds the Mephits are literally smaller aspects of the primordials, not merely created by them, but that literally the Primordials created them from themselves. While maybe at the end of the tantrum the Primordials had their manifestation or being was sundered into the Mephit race, and their primary essence was sealed away, but the Mephits to some degree do seek to reunite together an release essense of the Primordial. If the players either are working with the researcher, or one of them is the researcher that could lead to alot of interesting things happening an exploration into things other beings (including AO) might have wanted left forgotten.

I love Mephits, they make great little minions! Once I gave them a power attack; if enough Steam Mephits were alive together, then they could unite to form a powerful gust of wind. Is this canon? No! Do I or my players care? No!

I found an interesting way of modifying them using the different planar existences my rationalization was if they predate everything then they exist everywhere this means that they take on the characteristics of where they were for example you could have War versions or chaos versions or law versions even good and evil versions it's really all up to how far you were willing to modify the existing monster
