Long before Hilton Head Island in South Carolina became a vacation destination, it was a refuge for formerly enslaved people. But have you ever heard of the Gullah Geechee?
This community - with its own identity, language and culture - has been under relentless siege by threats of commercial development and land acquisition.
Their story is a warning to tourists everywhere: Your dream vacation could be happening on someone else’s ancestral land.

I think a fund needs to be set up for legal aid and for assistance in paying back taxes. Also, someone needs to look into the Hilton Head government being the largest "purchaser" of the land, especially since most of it is being lost due to property tax sales.

Americans aren’t taught Black history… many kids in schools (no matter what race) never learn about minorities, their struggles, what actually happened to Native Americans, the horrible things that happened to enslaved people (before and after 1865), the Chinese Exclusion Act, and as a history major in college- my professors put a primary focus on it, and I wish we could shout it from the rooftops. This information, along with the legacy of the Gullah Geechee (and their continued struggles) all deserve to be in history books! In order to teach kids love and compassion, they have to understand the struggles of the people around them. As a white kid from the Midwest, I can guarantee my school (and many schools) never taught any of this. There are so many changes that still need to happen in the US!

This is so wrong, but it is happening everywhere. My family has been on the same farm land for 7 generations, but every farm around it has been sold to developers. 200+ houses to the west, 300+ to the north, and 300+ now going up to the east. These latest homes are being sold for 500-7-00 thousand each. It is a matter of votes as well as tax base. Our little farm does not produce the amount of income that all of these other people do combined, that's for sure. Also, we have 3 voting adults vs. how many adults living in these developments?? We don't stand a chance, and eventually ( in the not too distant future) my mom will be pushed off of land that she and my dad worked all of their married life 62 years together.. They milked cows, tilled the fields, and raised 6 kids. They paid their taxes, were never in trouble with the law, helped everyone that they could and would give the shirt off of their backs, while doing without themselves. Why should they push her off of the farm??Because they are rich and she is not. The developers have an army of lawyers and politicians in their pocket and they know just what to do to take it away. My Aunt and Uncle had their home taken away by Emminent Domain. It was a home that my Great Grandfather built by hand and had been in the family for 4 generations. They said it was to widen the road. Road has never been widened, but the house was torn down. Stand your ground!! Hold on to every inch that you can and find a smart, savvy lawyer who will back you. Praying that you stand strong, and are victorious!!!!

Why do these people keep doing this? Displacing native inhabitants and desiccating culture? Who raises their child to have no consideration or respect for someone else. Such evil greed it's sickening 🤯 The united States government overthrew my queen and forcefully took away my kingdom of Hawaii in the late 1800s. Stole our land for commercial sugar production..tried to ban the speaking of our language..convert to Christianity..illegally imprisoned our then reigning Queen in her own palace by threatening bloodshed and genocide. Stole our rights, our heritage, and ultimately our culture and humanity.. How shameful..no heart and pure evil.

It was INCREDIBLE!!! I wanted to cry when I saw it tbh. I want to ho back & drive all through the southern states someday, seeing all those gravesites. It blew-my- mind. The history was on the island seemed like the only interesting part to me. The rest looked like upper middle class upper class, gated communities & expensive boats

I'm...very white lets get that out of the way lol. But, my great-grandparents moved to the Island in the 1910's. I'm born and raised on the Island and I can (as weird as it is) speak a little and understand basically without problems the Gullah language. I was born in 1990. At that point there was plenty of Gullah still around. I remember growing up driving home to our house on the water and there would be entire areas of dirt roads and Gullah fields of crops and several people I interacted with weekly were very very Gullah. Didn't think anything of it to be honest. Slowly, year after year, the land was sold and the area of Gullah influence has been eroded. I moved away for college and have stayed away because well it's a retirement community and I'm not 60 lol. I don't blame in any way the Gullah families who made huge amounts of money and secured family security and wealth, I wish the developers were more like the original developers in the 1950's who respected the Gullah culture a lot more. Y'all gotta realize the island was successful and grew (in terms of popularity) because it was different. Because it was peaceful. Because it was definitely a different culture and vibe. We should be protecting the Gullah culture there like...way more than we do. End Rant.

I grew up on hhi and it is now a completely different town! There is no affordable housing what so ever! Most workers commute in awful traffic. A lot of stores and restaurants close 3 to 4 days a week because they cannot find staff anymore, unless they pay higher wages. My parents rent land from Gullah descendants and they are the kindest people you’ll ever come across, they’ve had many offers to buy but it’s a matter of principle for them to keep their land. The house I got married in was also owned by a Gullah family and the owner’s donated some of their property to be converted to a local park that educates visitors about slavery. So Many rich people want to live there my friend who lives in a neighborhood near a beach said people often knock on her door and make her offers for her house! It’s getting quite ridiculous! Yes it’s a wonderful place to live but when only million dollar homes get built there it becomes an under serviced overrated resort, instead of a diverse interconnected small town with a cultural rich background. There are talks of the town stepping up to preserve more and add affordable housing but I’m currently unsure that will happen in my lifetime 😅

This is so wrong by all standards. Why hasn't other African American organizations stood up and fight for these people. Even if funds was raised to purchase the prime real a state for them. Pay the back taxes in order for them to keep their homes and land. There's something that can be done. This is pure discrimination. Some attorneys should help them with this fight.

Saying Heir's Property to a culture of a people who choose opportunity over things like culture, peace, and compassion is sadly futile. It's like the scream of the one animal who was targeted by a pack of predators. This capitalist culture (culture not capitalism in general) has always been more wild and savage than the animals we watch and document in the safari.

I had a friend my freshman year of college from Charleston and she was Gullah. She’d be talking to us and then she’d get a phone call from her mom or dad and her Gullah accent would come on out of nowhere. I asked her “are you Gullah”??
