For some it’s just about finding the right AJR song to relate to, like Karma isn’t going to hit as hard for someone that hasn’t experienced depression however if their parents went through a divorce then My Play is going to hit a lot harder. Like with OK Orchestra my least favorite song was Joe because I never had the experience of looking up to someone and just trying to emulate them but I didn’t hate the song just didn’t like it because I couldn’t click with it the same as other songs.

Amazing. For anyone wondering I believe I've figured out the meaning of this one. This is a popular person (all the "friends" the have) who is constantly being told who to be by all these different people they know. Because of this they're no longer pleasing themselves (the last time you had any fun was way back when you weren't anyone). They've become what everyone else wants them to be and left behind the part of them that is actually themselves (they don't want to "pack up and leave" that part of themselves). I think the reason for them writing this one is because they're always in the spotlight, but they get to be themselves instead of what others want them to be.

5 months late, i know, but these songs are supposed to be relatable. their songs are never just about them, that’s what makes ajr so unique. they don’t write stuff about a character, it’s all wider than that. this is about how when you’re kids, it’s just yay, eat glue and play in dirt! but as you mature, people separate into cliques that nobody truly fully fits into, everyone is an in-between of one thing and another. nobody is sucking on their thumbs anymore and nobody can ever truly be “ordinary” again without everyone reverting back to being 6 year olds with no personality other than “poop joke funnee”, so we’re all stuck like this. regardless of whether you’re one of the friends in the song, every single person has their friends who are just slightly judgmental because they don’t fit into the mold that even the friend doesn’t fit into. we all are going to be that friend at one point or another, whether we say it or not, and whether we think we’re like that or not. because that’s just how people work. the fact that this song can be applicable to nearly anyone, regardless of situation, shows how powerful ajr’s songwriting is. these guys are absolute geniuses with everything that they do. anyways internet essay over lol, im obsessed with ajr so im sorry if this was overly detailed but then again, no im not, i love looking way into things that i have a passion for :)
