For my 794th review, I have the opportunity to discuss AJR's grandiose sophomore experiment - and discover something for this decade worth "recognizing" indeed.

LOL Mark. I can honestly say I've never disagreed with you more on an album. I love this whole thing start to finish. I think it's an earnest, thoroughly modern pop record about growing up and anxiety. I like how much it deals with guilt, sobriety, and career in a really smart way. (I think there's something subversive and honest about songs like "No Grass Today" and "Weak" that beg the question about why he's even singing about this stuff if it REALLY doesn't bother him.) And it's exciting to listen to. I'm into how ADD the production is. Oh well. We are NOT on the same page on this one, and that's okay!
@aronpuma5962
@aronpuma5962 7 жыл бұрын
Hm, personally I think part of Mark's distaste is comparison to other artists who already have done music in this mold, but to him, better. Obviously Mark sites Jon Bellion and Twenty One Pilots, but if I may share a personal example that more defines my view of the album, I decided to listen to "No Grass Today" out of curiosity, and I wasn't angry but I have no use for it. I have no use for it because I already heard this song earlier this year. That song is "Drugs" by Alltta. Now, Alltta is collaboration between rapper Mr. J Medeiros and producer 20syl, and their song "Drugs" is remarkably similar to "No Grass Today" in concept, execution, lyrical ideas, even some production elements. And I would say both sound about equally preachy, "Drugs" is not like my favorite song or anything. But to me it just, works a lot better. The first reason for me is that it has a better melody. I don't what to grasp onto in "No Grass Today" because the vocal melody isn't well matched by the instrumental tones. There isn't an underlying harmonic structure that sticks in my head on "No Grass Today" and I kinda struggle to call up what the songs sounds like to my memory. 20syl has a clear melodic and harmonic throughline in his song that just connects with me a lot more, and even though that song also has a lot of melodic ideas, they seem connected, they all fit the harmoic structure, and feel like logical extensions of the last. It sticks in my memory. And that includes Mr. J Medeiros's flow. Honestly, I feel his flow fits the song melodicaly more than in AJR (not sure of the singer's name). And the lyrics make Mr. J Medeiros a bit more of a real figure. "Drugs" has these very specific details and circumstances that flow into each other. Not perfectly, but it builds reasoning, to explain what Medeiros thinks on drugs and lets him make his statement on it. And even though that statement is a tad wishy washy, you see why. He sounds like a person who has experience with this. AJR sounds a bit less believable, and more importantly, the ideas don't really build as well to me. Is "No Grass Today" my worst song ever? No, I just have no use for it and when I listen to it, I can only think of songs that sound better.

lol okay, I'm gonna say this right now: I enjoy both bands quite a bit. AJR has problems, but I really do respect them and enjoy the majority of their songs. But their original Overture (nor their new Overture) don't SOUND anything like Hand of God. The IDEA of mashing most of the songs on the album into a piece was similar, sure. But this is not a new idea in the lightest sense. A traditional Overture was mainly used in classical music at first (I believe) where it served as a prelude to the show. It, too, combined several of the ideas of the upcoming music into a single piece. My point here is that there's a difference between using a trope that's been in music for several centuries and blatantly ripping off a melody that's used in about a third of a song

Kind of late on this but I actually love this album because I feel they wanted some of the songs to be funny. The songs like Call my Dad and Bud Like You are some of my favorites because they're just weird songs to listen to with no serious meaning. The creators are 3 brothers making music so I feel that it's fine and suits their personality to make these strange songs. They literally just make random songs that they feel like making and put them together in an album and I like the randomness of it. I don't like all the songs on their but I like some because of this randomness and some lyrics are relatable to me. I thought that was obvious since they started getting known from the song I'm Ready which is super strange (I mean it literally has spongbob in it for no reason) but it's catchy and it's just a song for the heck of it. Overall I know that not all the songs are like this and some are trying to be serious and relatable which I even find annoying but all artist do this and they are still growing and getting experience. Their music really just seems for their fans who are familiar with their personalities and brotherly relationship with one another. It's for people who don't really take every song they listen to so seriously, so I can see why you and other people don't like them. Anyways I'm going to subscribe since this was an interesting video and I actually enjoyed how passionate you were about this and you took the time to analyze everything in you're own way and research some fact that I didn't know of even although my view of the band didn't change. Thanks for sharing your opinion and being serious about your job, it was very funny and entertaining, keep it up.

What’s funny is that I heard Weak and Sober Up on the radio and wondered about this band since I thought those songs weren’t too bad. I listened to everything they made at the time, and had a strong dislike of all of it. The Click was probably my favorite overall, actually, but I would still give it a 2 so that looks more like a diss at the band than a compliment to the album.

So, I decided that, you know, I can listen to a song from AJR, it's good to hear bad songs sometime. So I listened to "No Grass Today." And then I listened to Jon Bellion's "Morning in America." because I prefer the original. The only good thing about "No Grass Today" was that it was not remotely catchy due to... I wouldn't call it a melody.

I’m a person who enjoys multiple genres, as long as if the song’s good then it’s good, I don’t have a specific preference. I recently stumbled upon “The Click” and listened to the entire album, and it’s been on repeat for days. Songs like “Netflix Trip” will probably be a weird one for folks but as someone who grew up with the Netflix, where so many major part of me is measured by those seasons and episodes, it’s a vulnerable and nice song. The entire album is genuinely nice and a piece of work, but of course if you don’t like it that’s perfectly fine. I just wish you either talked slightly slower or separated your points in a way because it was difficult for me to keep up (and that may have just been my problem)

I'm going to be upfront, but I love AJR. Musically, they stand nothing near indie - they're a modern pop group...yet they're different. I'd much rather hear AJR on the radio that Justin Bieber or fucking Despacito. AJR concocts ridiculously catchy music, and I love everything they do on that side. Now...defending them on lyrics, meaning, purpose, methods...I mean for god's sake they made an album trying to talk about the fall of us because we like social media too much. That's their "theme", their deep insight on the human condition. At least Jon Bellion's The Human Condition had some surprisingly wise songs past the catchiness. I don't listen to AJR for wisdom, for lyrics, or for a deeper meaning. They just own the pop that they create, and I'm fine with that

I was listening to this album when I saw this in my recommendations and was like "Sure, let's see someone else have an opinion." So now I'm sitting here listening to him trash one of my favourite albums and agreeing with a lot of what he's saying about it that I never really thought about before now. I still like the music but it could have been done better and the people writing it could have had a better understanding of what they were actually saying instead of just trying to appeal to the "forever alone" teenagers the album ended up being directed at and accepted by.
