What I've gathered is that this song is about how you shouldn't compare your sorrows to others. The violin is his sorrow, bc he talks of playing it for his therapist. He calls it the smallest because he downplays his struggles, so to him they seem small next to others'. If you're struggling, your struggles are valid. Even if someone has it worse, your struggles are still valid.

If people want to become more grateful they can practice that because gratitude can be learned. They can keep a gratitude journal or something like that. I love the way the instruments blend into one another.
