It’s been awhile since this was posted, but I just now understood the song. For anyone wondering, ProTools is what AJR uses to make their songs, they have a mic and a big idea: Music. “Except the side we’ve been working seven years to see” Probably is true. I just realized how cool the message to this is lol. Also if you do the math let’s say by “No Id’s” they mean 21, 21-7=14. If they meant 18, then the age would be 11. I originally thought this song was about something else which made that funnier but when I realized what it’s about I realized the line is true.

I feel similarly to you, though I wouldn't call this one of their best songs (still very good though). My best friend got me into AJR a few months back and I started binging the albums, and when I got to living room I kinda hated it. Recently, I decided to give it another shot and living room is pretty good. I would still say it's their weakest album because they haven't fully realised the vibe of their later music, but this song, infinity, and green and town are really good songs on their own. Also thirsty is the greatest song ever written (joking). If I had to pick a favourite though it'd be Inertia.
