Bingo. The term Desi is a trojan horse for the wider Indian community. It was popularised in the West by Pakistanis who needed a good marketing term and some Indian Punjabis who for ideological reasons didn't want to associate with India. Proper Indians have always said what ethnicity they were (Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi etc.) because they don't disassociate with India.

Desi is sort of like "country" & it's a term mostly used by people in Northern parts of the Indian Subcontinent & not everyone in the Indian Subcontinent will relate to it. It's from the word Desh which means country or nation, so Deshi means of the country. The "sh" gets pronounced as "s" which gives you pronunciations like "Des" & "Desi". 7:32 No, I'd strongly disagree. He's definitely Punjabi. I'm not Punjabi myself but surely Punjabis in Punjab would agree with me that he's very much one of them. Even though it's his stepfather who is Punjabi he himself literally did grew up in Punjab & also speaks fluent Punjabi. He's more Punjabi than many of the ethnic Punjabis who despite being Punjabi can't or don't speak Punjabi preferring hindi or urdu depending on the country.

Desi or Deshi is not a Slang & It certainly doesn't mean South Asian. For that you will have understand a term Des or Desh which basically means country. And so Desi or Deshi is a term used for a person who is a local resident of your own country or a thing that is grown or made locally in your own country. And the opposite of that is called Vides or Videsh... Which obviously means a Foreign Country. And so Videsi or Videshi means thing or a person coming from outside your country ... Basically a Foreigner or a thing imported from foreign land. For an American another American is Desi. For an American a Birtish or German or Russian or anyone coming from any country outside USA is Videsi. If you produce Olive oil in America it becomes Desi or Deshi. IF you are importing Olive oil from Spain or Italy it becomes Videsi or Videshi.

@thebrIndian11 сағат бұрын
Desi is slang for “Native”. It is derived from the word “Desh” which means country at its most basic but on a deeper level it means homeland hence the semantical meaning of the word “Desi” is “one from the homeland.” That is why it applies to anyone from the subcontinent who either speaks or just understands Hindi or Urdu. Pakistanis and Indians etc will refer to themselves as Desi’s - people from the Homeland. That my friends is the actual meaning of Desi in English.
