Before I must admit that I couldn't understand Akagi's philosophy. Until, I watched Shogun recently. "You should just die when your time comes." Few times, while explaining to Anjin their philosophy Mariko says to him along the lines of: "we live and we die". Watching it as a man living in Balkan, it was extraordinary to see and listen to the depiction of the Japan and its people at the end of the Sengoku period. Looking deeper into this, I re-examined Akagi as a character. Born possibly right after Japan's terrible WW2 defeat and beginning of it's financial turmoils he had to adapt to survive more than anyone. Especially, seeing how we never see or even hear about his parents we can also probably assume he's an orphan or they don't even care about him (like, very first chapters/episodes we know he was playing chicken in a stolen car). It's no wonder he has this sort of mindset. He had to have it to stay sane let alone survive.

Anyone whos ever played Japanese mahjong or Poker has probably experienced the 'thrill' of understanding another player and playing in a way to beat them would understand what Akagi is saying. Theres no point in gambling for the sake of gambling.
