Akai GX 280D Reel to Reel Demo Video.

I bought one of these back in 1972 while stationed in the service in Germany. I had an issue with the left channel but got it fixed. It was not a bad deck, and I sold it a year ago after it had been in storage for 15 years.

Please, give me an advice. I have the same akai. Today I recorded for the first time. The sound at slower recording speed was poor. Recording at 7 1/2 speed was ok. Maybe there's a problem with the 40-year-old tape I have. Unfortunately I don't have a new one to compare. Can there be a problem in the tapes, or is there a fault on the akai?

Martin Illas Make sure the heads are clean, use Q Tips and 91% isopropyl alcohol. Most of the time bad recording quality is the result of dirty heads.

Were the tape heads cleaned prior to the demo?

Bruce Jones They were cleaned. The problem turned out to be a misaligned playback head.
