I have been waiting for some time to see one of these GX-F91s on your workbench. Finally, it is there. This is my most desirable AKAI to own, period. What a beautiful deck, but it seems like a really challenging machine to work on. AKAI crammed so much into a small space. I can't wait to see more of your magic touches while bringing this rare gem back to life. Please document all the fixes big and small in great detail for posterity. Your work is an inspiration. Thank you!

I have the same deck which I bought new, but mine has the silver face. I think one of the hardest repair parts is replacing the control board belt and adjusting it. You have to remove the motor and then loosen the plate on the other pulley enough that you can sneak the belt around it . Then you have to adjust the limit switch so it closes properly. There is also a screw on that jack shaft that has to be adjusted so the door closes square. It’s a trial and error thing so expect do it a couple times to get it right. The door should close all the way tight but still have a little tension on it so it doesn’t spring open when the motor shuts off. It should be flush with the cassette door . You can see if the door is closing Square by looking at it from the bottom and making sure it’s going straight on both sides as it’s closing. You can tell when the belt is worn. When the door goes to the in position, the motor will keep running because it won’t be able to activate the door in limit switch. I think it’s a great deck and the autotune tape control with memory works great. Good Luck

I also have the original owners manual and service manual if you would like to copy it. In fact, I might even have an extra owners manual you could have if you’re gonna keep the unit yourself it’s kind of cool. So if we’re keeping score, it’s 1 for bill and 1000 for you . I’ve learned a lot watching your videos.

@@williambraeger5077 I have a PDF version, it's fine. What I can't get is that the full movement of the arm does not correspond to the full rotation of the large gear. it still lacks about 1 cm to push the switch when the door closes. I am stuck with this.

From what I can remember (this is 10 years ago) I thought there was a screw on that jack shaft which adjust the clutch pressure (by pushing it in )but also if you loosen it, you can rotate those gears . I don’t have my service manual with me, but I’ll download it and try to re-look it up

@williambraeger5077 thanks, I just finished with this part. The friction mechanism was stuck due to not using it for so many years.

This is the most complicated deck I’ve seen. I’m assuming you are going to keep this one forever? How many pages in the service manual?

use a drop of oil, before you try to move and remove stuck parts and behave more gentle with those mechanisms
