Really been appreciating your vids after buying the mpc one. I've been toying with learning ableton as not yet dipped my toe but it's videos like this make me think that I've got so much fun and enjoyment ahead of me using a standalone. Please keep releasing these vids! Much appreciated
@TheCratesMotel2 ай бұрын
In a perfect world you can use both, but yes, there is something to be said for just having a standalone machine and doing everything on it. It's like the days of the Bluesman, just sitting in a room with an acoustic guitar.

Re 'ideal world' :do you mean to use ableton for arrangment once initial beat production and sampling etc has been completed on the mpc? Or something else?
@TheCratesMotel2 ай бұрын
@@DavidRozier-tj6uh Yes mate. Personally I love to sketch, write, even arrange in the MPC but then it’s nice to bounce into my DAW and add the finishing touches.

I don’t use the 909 much I’m more of an 808 guy myself, I like that sound. But it’s good to know how to make the 909 sound good. That’s a real jewel you gave about people thinking a sound isn’t any good when they don’t take into consideration that it needs to be mixed and shaped properly. Big time jewel right there! Oh and I like this lens better than the previous one you’ve been using. It seems too pale or something but this one looks really good. My eyes are getting bad too though 😂

the new "XL channel strip" on mpc3 seemed like a bit of a gimmick to me at first, but it reqlly does make a massive difference in working with the mpc3. It's brilliant how enjoyable working on that small screen is now. MPC went from one ofnmy most frustrating pieces of gear to one of my favorites

Where did you get the samples from? both the kick and the hats sound better than most well known samples out there
@TheCratesMotel3 ай бұрын
They are from my original TR909. I recorded them onto 1 inch tape in the late 90s and then digitised them in the early 2000s, but only as 16bit 44.1khz wavs. I guess there is a tiny bit of tape compression on there and the sound of our SSL desk. It all adds up to the final sound.

Hello any standalone options for a Vu Meter?
@TheCratesMotel3 ай бұрын
No mate. Not yet. It’s been requested multiple times. By many people. However you can get something like the TC Electronic Clarity and use the metering in that with your MPC. There also some good external VU Meters you could use.

Thanks Conan. I think these tips will come in very handy. I have an old Novation Drumstation which I love to use with my Beatstep Pro to get something going and really just for a relaxing jam session usually on a Sunday. It's fun However I often record/sample it into my MPC and when I listen back I think "Oh my god what a pile of shiite" I have never used a real 909 but am curios to know. What do you think of the old Drumstation???? Also, what do you think of the MPC drumsynth as a source of 909 ness??? I cant quite figure out if I like it or not?? Ive not delved into sub mixes yet but Im gonna set up a 909 template right now and get stuck in. Cheers again
@TheCratesMotel3 ай бұрын
I used to have a Drumstation many years ago. I remember it sounding a little thin and brittle and needed a lot of EQ work. But I loved it. I am planning on doing a video on the Drum Synth. I think it’s ok. It needs EQ and compression work most of the time but I think used in the right situations, it’s a decent tool for arsenal.

@TheCratesMotel3 ай бұрын
Hey mate. I have actually made a video on submixes. 3.0 is a bit different to 2.15 but sending tracks (or programs) to sub mixes is the same pretty much. Select the Output on the channel and scroll to Submixes.

@@TheCratesMotel nice one, thanks for doing the deeper side of house style, the tone is exactly what I’ve been searching for. I listen to and admire a lot of Joe Claussell’s work and I’m fascinated how he gets that tone in his drums and how thick the percussion sounds. Any tips on thickening percussion samples into a realistic groove?
@TheCratesMotel3 ай бұрын
@@SunlightOfTheSpirit I love Joe and the Ibadan stuff. He uses mostly live percussion in his stuff. I can’t really explain in a sentence how to mix it, but it is doable in the MPC.

You know I’ve been thinking about something for a long time. And this video solidified my decision. I’m going to stop using ten thousand drum sounds and stick to the 808 drum sounds and maybe one or two drum kits good for boom bap and all around hip hop. Because I’m SICK of browsing through loads of drum sounds and by the time I get that together I don’t feel like making anything! You House producers seem to stick with the 909 and it sounds great! And real drummers aren’t concerned with having a thousand different drum sounds. John Bonham, Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Al Jackson, Jr, etc. all had a signature sound pretty much. I’m about to simplify simplify simplify!!!
