Nice to see you Bizzy! The send and return should give you the opportunity to use the fx board with an external source. On the s3000xl at least it works this way using the digital in and out (red and white) on the back with an analog signal. Big ups!

The S950's RS232 port can be hooked right up to an Atari's modem port, and it will work using the C-Lab Export drivers with the baud rate set to 31,250. They were kind of made to work with the Atari, hence the Atari hard drive expansion. There is a cool free editor for the S900/950 that runs on an Atari ST called Squash It!

The S300XL reads all of the files and is a great sampler , for me the only notable snag is if you own s950 disks it does not read the tone program / keygroup settings

I have a s900 and a S1000 both with a Gotek usb, i'm used to sample my drum breaks into the S900 and then i resample them into the S1000 and i'll proceed to the edit stage. Why? because i've noticed that if i transfer the sample directly into the S1000 with the usb stick the sound change, the drums sounds a little bit brighter, so i resample them to maintain the original timbre from the S900.

The cable going to the ZuluSCSI should not get hot. Those consume so little power, I run mine off the SCSI cable without running a dedicated power cable. If something is heating up, you've probably got a shorted circuit at work. Cool machines, I'd love to hear them compared in a double blind listening test.

Yes Yes Bizzy have fun with those Eproms. I have a bunch here myself. They're lovely components no? They have a really nice weight in the hand and erasing them with UV light very cool.... I have an old LinnDrum that came cheap from a shop in Llandudno with all the wrong sounds in. The last thing I need in there is 909 and 808 bits... ha ha. So I got the Eproms and wrote LinnDrum sounds on and refilled the machine back to OG sound.This is definitely the absolutely slowest way you will ever load a single sample into a drum machine. It's a privilege to experience the traditional methods for sure though. Patient work leads to a different quality of attention.

@@TheBizzyBScience The UV box I have is just an anonymous box covered in Chinese Characters and the word Eprom bought from eBay over a decade ago. It could well be a bit dodge.... It seems to work... at least sometimes....

950 is 12bit and 1000 was 16bit (aka “CD quality”). It was a pretty huge step-up from the 950’s limitations such as the single voice polyphony whereas it was possible to stack through a single output but also have 2 extra velocity layers (intended presumably for for multi-velocity samples). It had much better, more advanced/capable operating system. That said it also had more glitches than you’d be likely to find in a 950. I personally found the sound a lot cleaner in the 1000 at the time but still very much enjoyed what I could do with it (I had an s1100 which was more or less the same as a 1000 but with an FX board and perhaps something else I cannot recall. In all these years I only recently properly discovered that the 950 can load 1000 disks which I thought was only possible the other way around. Anyway thanks again Brian for delving into more super nerdy sampling details its always a nice affirmation to see I’m not the only one who obsesses about these machines 😅 big up starr

16bit yes is cd quality but it doesn’t mean the converters will make it sound like cd quality. My mpc60 is 16bit (and no it’s not 12bit) and it sounds nothing like cd quality

@@saren6538 did you see the inverted commas? I started with s900 and went to s1000 around the same time the s950 came out. Whatever the minuscule tech spec heir splitting differences, for all intents and purposes it is not uncommon to paraphrase. Being that it would confuse people not yet savvy to ultra wizard nerd level 999999 specifics. 900 has always been a 12 bit sampler in common parlance among people who use samplers to make music. The white coat data section of the manual is ofter regarded as for the white coats by those people and sometimes even the white coats 🧑‍🔬 16 bit is not cd quality? Yeah uh ok , I’ll take your word that it’s not 16/44.1k and crack on

Calm down boys, no need to head into kernel panic here over some specs… I have a fully maxed out S1100 too and absolutely love to abuse it. Having efx really puts it in another dimension and lets not forget that the fact that the sound is more polished (compared to a 12bit sampler) allows it to be a lot more flexible. Try sampling some string sounds with the 950 and you’ll hear what I mean. Btw, If you want to rough up your sound with the 1100, it’s got a fantastic front end that will let you do just that by driving your signal into it. It also features recording to disk, which is fun. (Just plug in your usb stick at the back.. I wish 😅) Having both would of course be best but if I had to choose, it’s the S1100 for me any day. Plus it’s stereo!

I grew up on the 950 had nearly every sampler but never a 1000. Love the 12bit sound but for me the lack of mod wheel to filter is the only down fall of the s950. Envelope or velocity only

VP-9000 by roland were my option.. but Tal -Sampler VST makes da same if the is loop total chopped . Akai s-1000 sounds well . more function on the wide screen .Akai S-3200 with HD . is bit better maybe .

S1000 you upgrade the eproms to match 3000 and you can use mesa2 with a hard drive and the 1000 reads the 3000 samples.

Na the cheetah sx16 and eps-m 13 bit is the most unique of the lot. I have a 950 / 1000 / emax 1 and the the cheetah and epsm blows them away

Playback. it was the s1000 but no sampler. we loaded everything via floppy. Didnt even have a scuzzy in them days hahaha. Great times. Sweating blood to make music then. I sold the akai to my dear friend. Cool Hand Flex. Long long time ago @@TheBizzyBScience.

Very different machines when it comes to pitch ,s950 does that via cpu clock rate change (much better) s1000 via interpolation like all akais after the 950 ,that is why 900/950 are more expensive not 12 or 16 bit but the transpose sets value
