I lived in Christchurch from age 4 to age 27. Akaroa was a pretty regular holiday hangout for my family. As a little kid I went to YMCA summer camp at Wainui, across the harbour from Akaroa. In high school, I went on a historical field trip to examine the remains of a pa sacked by Te Rauparaha. As an adult I had friends who worked in local hotels. Hector's dolphins are straight up great, they are friendly and fun loving. They especially like kids. Thanks for this video! You are doing NZ right.

Amazing intro! Big Star Wars fan. You simply nailed it in capturing the beauty of the dolphins. I never would have considered the similarities to Mickey Mouse before. Looks completely serene being on those waters and the way you filmed the cruise. I also love when you incorporate the interesting historical asides. Another one for the books.

Haha Star Wars, you silly guy. To be fair the fine folks on the cruise along with the department of conservation described it that way. I really appreciate it, thank you!

One of my favourite places. My parents have a bach towards the top of the harbour and I like to get down there any time I can. A beautiful spot with such a relaxing atmosphere.

Us too! I could see that for sure... sounded like they got 4000 - 5000 people come through their on certain days before the pandemic via cruise ships but it could be a bit out of the way for a South Island road trip

Great vid as usual, Donovan. RE ‘bach’ I don’t know if you came across this but many ‘mainlanders’/ south islanders use the term ‘crib’ instead of bach, though I have no idea about the origin of where that comes from. Keep up the great work. :-)

Hi there question time what is some interesting New Zealand facts you learnt on your trips around New Zealand or some New Zealand slang.
@donovankelly12 Жыл бұрын
Great question! Off the top of my head I’ll say the Moa and the Haast’s Eagles. We read about them when we were in Castle Hill and this little infographic suggested that this giant eagle with a 3 metre wingspan used to hunt humans (along with other flightless birds). It was the biggest eagle in the world and yeah I just had no idea that was ever a thing haha would not have been fun to see one of those 600 years ago

Akaroa is not French, that is an advertising theme pushed by mumnuts to create interest. There were more Scotsmen here than French in the early days.
@donovankelly124 ай бұрын
Interesting! The tour guides and infographics that you can read never mention that.
@akaroamale4754 ай бұрын
@@donovankelly12 No they wouldn't. One boat of French settlers did land but the British were here first and in more numbers. My wife lived here up till her teen years, not a single French name was on anything. Then the marketing started and it snowballed from there. I being from English stock want to buy the pub and rename it to "The Kings Arms" and fly English flags off it during the annual French Fest. Never mind enjoy the place and take a look at the only French building in the town which is part of the museum complex.

@akaroamale4754 ай бұрын
Neither. Moari sold the area to both the French and the English and then said but that's not what we meant when we sold it to you. Then they signed a treaty. Now the majority pay most of the taxes to support the minority who do nothing but moan about the amount they take from the system.
