Completely disagree with those criticizing the place. Went there last year and it was fun to visit the place where the entire AKB48 phenomenon got its start. While the escalator posters may not have been in pristine condition, I really didn’t notice it as it was just so cool to see the huge iconic posters plastered on every wall on the journey up the many escalators. In fact, this video doesn’t show the full extent of the dozens of huge posters (as videographer likely didn’t want to invade other customer’s privacy)! And seeing all the framed photos of the current members, and knowing every one of the famous members past and present walked those halls was exciting enough. If you’re a fan, it’s definitely worth visiting! And I’m not sure how much it will change, as the 2024 renovations may be focused on the interior theatre, not necessarily the external areas shown in this video.

Honestly thank you for this. I never got to go to the og theater and now that they are renovating I will never get to go. So this will do.

As someone who’s been there before the renovation: you’re not missing out on much, the camera is doing a lot of justice to how it actually looks. Paint chipping off the walls from the escalators up to the rooms outside the theatre and within. Posters peeling off and the “wings” on the left and right side of the stage are made with this weird cheap wood. I’m not surprised there was moss growing inside the theatre and I highly doubt this renovation is doing any more than covering up the mess. I guess it’s Akihabara so I should’ve lowered my expectations a bit, but as a fan I was expecting at least a decent effort into upkeep especially considering this is Japan’s #1 selling girl group. If anyone reading this plans to go I’m not saying you shouldn’t, but as someone who glamorizied the location I was left really dissapointed when I got there.

@@hcwrtinkoifewwa yeah I’ve heard from some people about the same thing and how disappointed they were. I agree if it’s growing mold it can be dangerous so I’m happy that that will be fixed. but I wanted to go there with all the legendary/iconic events that happened in mind. I just wanted to feel the presence of the theater and knowing that some of my favorite people grew up there or find this as one of there safe spaces.

I've been to this place a number of times (incl attending a theater perf inside). I think we need to see from both sides. Yes this place is dirty, crammed, ugly. Compared to other 48G theaters both in Jpn and overseas, I think this is the worst. But this ugly place is very iconic, it's where it all started. Ground zero for all 48G. I don't know how drastic the renovation will be, sure they need to fix the structure, clean the molds, etc, but I hope they don't change the layout too much.

@@qwerty683100 yes you get me. I do want it to get renovated but not to the point well it will be completely unrecognizable. A lot of iconic things happened here so I wanted to atleast visit it once. Your lucky you got to go more than once.

Thanks for posting this. Back in 2018 I vacationed in Japan but didn't have time to visit the theater. This is as close as I've gotten. 👍

I really loved the mashup of AKB48's greatest hits. 😊

thanks for the content it makes me know how was the AKB48 theater looks like. Hopefully can coming there after the renewal.
Do you have a longer version of this video? I’d love to see what the stores look like. If I get the chance to go 🤞 I’d want to shop for souvenirs too.

@@bbartky when I made this video I filmed only what you see here but if you search "Donki Akihabara" on KZbin I'm sure you'll find many videos of the building

Unfortunately there are no memorabilia stores there. You can buy from the official store online, or at concert venues, or at one or two general idol group stores in Tokyo. But most places only have Sakamichi stuff these days, which is very disappointing.
