I bought a pair in 1980 and still have them. The sound company that sold them to me referred to them as 'the good 57'. I agree with their assessment.

Thank you for checking it out. The vocal test kinda blew my mind a little. Cheap mics. Huge sound. Is it the mic or the singer? My bets on the latter!
@BandrewScott

@@meistudiony Exactly. Singer 100%. Goes back to that idiom: The best mic is the one you have, or that knowledge that good gear can’t make for a good performance. Or something like that.

@@BandrewScott remember that torture video of the mouth noise / clicks... yeah... lol I might wanna listen to that over a green bullet. Im planning on doing a video on it, just have to find the right harmonica player, since thats really the only thing i can demo with it besides the fun drum room trick. Probably the only mic that a telephone is an upgrade! And you dont give yourself enough credit. Your demos are fun and they're always something slightly different but different enough!

Fantastic video! I completely agree with you. Heck in almost all of the videos on my channel we're using a 58 or the Telefunken equivalent (which still isn't all that expensive) in a room with a ton of drum bleed and the singers STILL SOUND GREAT! In a recording situation the right mic to complement a singer will certainly help but the crux of the sound comes from the source. Always. Same goes for musical instruments. As far as the sound of this particular mic goes, it honestly felt largely interchangeable with the SM57 right up until you got to the snare drum where they sounded wildly different and I think I actually preferred the 57!
@meistudiony

Thanks! And, yeah, its getting confirmed more and more as I do this over and over again. Source is key. As @BandrewScott said here... the best mic is the one you have. Without the direct comparison to say a Neumann or some high end condenser, this sounds really good.

I enjoyed this. thank you. I like microphones and I like to mix them up. I preferred the D1000E on snare in your example. I could go either way on your other examples. I do a lot of live video and am recently collecting vintage dynamic mics because they look cooler in the shot!

I recently ran into a mic that has been on like every live music show from the late 60s into the 70s and early 80s. Electro-voice 635A. Really basic look to it but pretty cool. I'll be doing a vid on this soon hopefully if the studio calms down for a min. Thanks for checking out the videos and commenting (this one and the AKG D190), I really appreciate it!

I was looking this up because I'm selling one I've had for years. But now it sounds so good compared to the SM57 (which I don't own, I have a Senheiser e835), maybe I should keep it? Great sound for the $100 I'll probably get for it.
@meistudiony
@meistudiony 4 ай бұрын
If what you have is in good shape you can probably get more than $100 right now and this mic is DEF worth it. It has a much more neutral (natural maybe) sound than the 57 which has a deep scoop in the mids and a hyped high end. Thanks for checking it out!

In this video, no the shure is a regular modern 57. Though if you check out the latest SM57 video you'll see theres virtually no difference between an old 57 and a new one. The hype is just that... hype. Thanks for checking out the video!

So the E signifies a canon or regular xlr connector. Ive never seen the M suffix (theyre more rare) from what i can tell the M has a different setting on the 3 way switch. Instead of BMS it has BMO (possibly off?). Other than that, likely the same capsule.

Surprised at how nice the sound of the D1000e on the grand piano was - first impression was "that's classy sounding" - can't say I often turn to dynamics for piano mics, but if I had these around, I might!

Thanks for the video… I have vintage unidyne IIIs … They do all age differently… sonically I prefer them over a 57 yet it’s a small variable.. The vintage Unidyne 3 had a larger output transformer than my 57 if I remember correctly. Cheers

@@meistudiony Johan segeborn has a great video, showing one off with other Mics. (Maybe a few shootouts) I bought 3 and all aged differently. One I would consider broken cause it’s very bandwidth limited … the other two both sound amazing but still very different. It was love at first test when I used it on my guitar cabs…. Amazing breakup. Will mitigate any modern speaker with too much fizz. The EV 660 is the same mic. Would be a great video but I don’t want people knowing about these. 😜 Yes the later skinny 664s I hear were virtually the same. After digging… I found an EV rep on gearspace explain that the PL6 and the 660 were the same but just marketed differently even though one was considered super cardioid, which he explains is relative, but the same polar patter actually.

Great video. I thought the AKG crushed the 57 on all sources. The 57 made the hi-gain guitar sound fizzy, the stand-up bass undefined, and the snare body-less.
@meistudiony
@meistudiony Жыл бұрын
The extended low end on this mic makes all the difference. (Esp on the bass) not having the top end as hyped certainly helps as well, but that can usually be eq’d. However, you cant really add in something that doesnt get captured from the source. So yeah… its definitely a more viable option than the 57 for a lot of applications! Thanks for the comment and for checking out the vid.

Thanks for checkin out the vid. I have a pair but one needs a little work. The little rubber grommet thing that holds the capsule into the body released and wont stay put. If it doesnt get knocked around, its fine, but a little shake or bump and the capsule assembly is rockin around the headbasket. What do you use yours on, out of curiosity?

Weird. On the gtr examples, the akg sounded more detailed. Ditto on snare. I think better. The sm57 sounded darker to me on gtr cab. On the voice though, complete OPPOSITE! The female vocals sounded brighter on 545 / 57 whatever it was. Never seen such a dichotomy before, but then again, I rarely do straight comparison shootouts like this. Seriously thinking about a 1000e on snare though, and possibly gtr. IMHO, the sm57 sounded a hair fuller and darker on gtr, but less articulate. Not sure which I'd take honestly, maybe depends on the source and player's settings and gtr. On snare drum the 1000e surprisingly wiped the floor with the 57. I think that sometimes on thin snares though, maybe the 57 thru api fills out the low mids when placed close, yet I'm always looking for just a hair more detail. Kinda gets this blown up low mid with proximity effect. Piano? Another tough call. I felt like on the 1000e the notes had more separation on piano, but 57 was fuller, albeit more "blurry". Hate to use the term, warmer maybe. Darker?Thanks for the killer video! I might look for a GOOD cond. 200e as well. Appreciate the hard work that went into this!

Appreciate the thoughts. The 1000 is definitely a sleeper that not many think of as an alternative to the 57. The 200 isnt bad either. I have a 1000e i have to get in the shop to deal with the rubber rot issue they have. But yeah, i really dig it on snare for a more “vintage” sound. Little more heft in the low mids that the 57 scoops out.

Well, honestly what brought me here to your vids? I'm in mid 50's now, been doing this for 30+ years. I still get the guys my age wanting classic rock sounds. And younger people wanting the same. I keep hearing about the 224, 200, 202 etc being used in England on early 70's British records. There is not a ton of info out there on the dual dynamics. The fragility worries me a bit though. Buying one with one working capsule cuz seller says "working" seems like it could be a real possibility. And they'd not be lying. It's technically "working". I appreciate you putting info some up!@@meistudiony
