FIRST IMPRESSIONS REVIEW:
Well, talk about love at first listen. I have to restrain myself from gushing during the honeymoon period, but I've listened for a day now and I love these. These headphones do indeed mix my favourite aspects of the AKG K612 and the Sony MA900. Namely, mixing the dry detail and scale / depth of the former with the warmth and easy going nature of the latter. And also improving on both with a really palpable sense of detail in the highs.
The K712 isn't quite as linear sounding as the K612, which has a really balanced mix of sub-bass and mid-bass. The K712 fills in the mid-bass more, which I kind of prefer. It's also less raw / grainy in the vocals compared to the K612, while at the same time seems to present more detail in the treble.
Compared to the MA900, it actually sounds very similar. Maybe a bit more forward in the vocals, but overall it's a similar signature. It doesn't quite have the same diffuse soundstage width but it makes up for it with wonderful detail imaging, and overall sounds just tighter and more precise both in the treble and the bass.
I've gotta say that the mids/treble is actually my favourite aspect of the K712 Pro. It sounds gorgeous with strings and pianos, fast and energetic without being too splashy. That said this is still going to make 'hot' recordings ugly.
Of course I'll do more listening. I don't have the HD650 on hand to compare directly anymore, which is a real bummer. But at this point I'm extremely satisfied with the $298 deal I got! ^__^

Nice to see you picking up the K712. It's ones of my favorite headphones. I found it and my HD 600 are perfect compliments for each other. I think I'm satisfied in terms of headphones. The energetic and tight sound of the K712 and the lush relaxed sound of the HD 600 seems to satisfy all my needs and moods in audio.

Carter Massa Both are good choices for EDM... I prefer the M50x because it is more portable, but they both sound good.

The Custom One Pro are a lot more comfortable in my opinion and _everything_ on the headphones is user-replaceable short of the drivers and ear cups.

I was going to pick a pair of these up but was pretty sternly warned not to bother unless I could drive them, something I'm unable to do at the moment due to my confusing and slightly messy set up. Is that true, or can these be used well enough unamped? Thanks!

Depends. Through just my iPhone is alright to listen to but it is still on the lower side. Personally they need amped. I have an SB ZxR and Fiio E17 for now, however I'm looking at getting the Valhalla 2 from Schiit.

I was wondering if I could get a recommendation from you *****. I'm trying to choose a good IEM for me, I own the VSD1 but unfortunately they broke today. I'm trying to decide between these three JVC-FXD80-Z, Shure SE215 Special Edition(The blue ones), or VSD3. I really liked the VSD1 mainly because they sounded amazing for EDM, Hip-hop, and Rap but I needed something with a little more bass than the VSD1. If you could help me pick between these 3 or recommend me another IEM that fits my description I would greatly appreciate it! And also my budget would be under $130

Super surprised to see you checking out the K712's! I had them for a while but had to return them because they had a bass rattle that was intolerable. Be sure to play something sub-bass heavy to ensure your pair is rattle free. All in all I think I like the more refined sound of my HD650's more but the K712's are still great. Looking forward to your impressions!

I personally am the opposite. I couldn't see spending more money for less. The 650s are too warm for me. I prefer the aggressiveness of the K712s. The 600/650s are just over priced to me.

whats your opinion on them? I was planning on getting those due to the simplistic design and i've heard they offer a pretty good sound, but i dont like the design flaws like the headphone jack is in the back and how the volume is touch so everytime you want to change the volume, the speaker moves. Plus, is their a lot of distortion at high volume, like pass 75%?

I'm assuming the "3dB improved low end" is versus the K701 and K702. The Q701 has a different tuning and doesn't sound the same as the K70x.

Well, that's arguable. There are several version of phones out there. I owned Q701 for almost 3 years and during that time owned two K701's. One was brand new, and one was old from like 2007. The new one sounded identical to Q701's, to my ears, and old K701 sounded a bit brighter and claner with slightly less bass, but tighter and faster.

You can easily get more bass out of the K70x or Q701 by opening up the headphones and removing that little circular cover over the bass port. It extends the bass quite a bit and someone at AKG said it does not void your warranty. So something to try, check the head-fi forums on the Q701 to see details of the mod

It sounds like the Q701 but with a little more bass. The soundstage is more realistic but less wide. I think the Q701 has a more airy sound. Overall, it's a very weak improved version of the legendary K701 / Q701.

attention - I had AKG K601 and now Q701. I had constant problems with left headphone. After service fixed it was the same and again it start to do problems.. and now.. its joke - I want to get them on my head, and guess fucking what ? Left just stop playing!!
