Fair enough - the aim wasn't to do a scientific test but just to give an impression of the way the mics basically sound. I will keep an eye on that next time I do a comparison though, thankyou.

The ideal would be to make the recording, both microphones at the same time ... using two channels ... there we would have a very faithful comparison ... but thanks ... hug

Good Morning. I bought an AKG P420 and I'm doing tests in my home studio, when I record it gets a slight hum, like an air conditioning hum. But, if I hold the metal part of the cable that fits the microphone, with my foot in contact with the floor, that buzzing disappears and the recording is cleaner. (I thought: will I have to record while holding the cable?) But when I turned on the low cut filter I noticed that the buzz disappeared, just as if I were holding the handle. My question is: Can I always record with the low cut filter activated without losing any quality in the voice?
@reggaerahul3 жыл бұрын
I experienced exact same thing. I thought it's my electricals which are leaking something into my audio interface as this happens for other dynamic mic too when I closely listen. I'll try with low cut filter but I think it has to do with your electrical supply or grounding not done well.
@kensmechanicalaffair3 жыл бұрын
It's probably a cheap cable.
@PhoctorDill Жыл бұрын
Mine has the same issue but i noticed that isn’t as bad when im not touching it at all. Its likely a grounding issue but im not an electrician. That sound will never fully go away though because the self noise on this mic is rather high. The reason that the low cut helps is because the hum is at 60hz (the frequency of single phase power in the US) and the low cut filter on this mic cuts out any frequencies below like 150hz I wanna say, u can def look that up if u wanna double check that lol. But to answer your question about sound quality it just depends. A low cut filter is not changing the sound quality per se, just cutting out low frequencies (like the hum you were hearing and rumble coming from the ground and such) so it really just depends on what you’re trying to capture. If you’re trying to record bass, then yes the low cut filter is definitely not a good idea, but for vocals its not as big of a deal.
Can they be used for guitar? I always get confused whether its a vocal mic or for guitar
@MegaMusicOnline8 жыл бұрын
They can indeed with good results. Just be aware to keep the gain down or apply a pad switch in the case of amps.
@AlexeyFilippenkoPlummet7 жыл бұрын
Best value for the buck acoustic guitar mic I've ever heard is Oktava Mk-012. It's just PHENOMENAL on guitars. And you can buy it for as low as $120 here in Russia (or $240 for a stereo pair). But b/w nt1a and P420 I'd say that NT1A will be a bit better for acoustics due to capturing more warmth and high-end "airy" sounds. As for heavy electro guitar, P420 would probably be a litte bit better, but not really much.

how come my p420 makes buzzing sound?
@MegaMusicOnline7 жыл бұрын
My guess would be some kind of environment interference. All things being equal, the p420 should be quiet as a mouse. I would try taking it to a different place or studio, and listen to it there. This will help work out whether the mic or the environment is the problem. But the mic should be quiet.

@MegaMusicOnline8 жыл бұрын
Hi Erika - both mics are 'condenser' so not sure what you mean exactly. There are a lot of recording software types (DAWs) out there, from free downloads like Audacity through to Protools, Ableton Live. My personal fave is Ableton Live. The trick with software is finding one that matches your expertise and purpose. What do you want to do?

p420. I used an old perception 120 for AGES and its a wonderfully honest mic, and the new P420 is just a beefier version of the old 420, the daddy of the 120. the Perception 120 lasted me 5+ years including being dropped / not kept in a case and used for maybe 100 or so songs throughout the years. NT1A is just too harsh for me, you'll have to really mess with it in EQ to get a good sound imho, and all that eq-ing will most likely kill some of the nice airy-ness of the mic. I've been eyeing the NT1-a for ages but the P420 is just a better sounding mic that requires less work to fit into a rap mix imho. even if you have expensive outboard gear to treat the mics with, why not start with the most neutral full sound and just do some small EQ changes instead of having to cut chunks out of the frequency bands?

They are very similar specs, so unless you're in pristine recording conditions AND you have high-end audiophile/sound engineer's ears (or some other version of freakdom), they are going to both sound similar. Both are well built and put out professional level sound quality. Both have a pad and low cut. I would look into whether you want a cardiod pattern or the multi in the sE. The AKG is a multi and has low cut.
