For the female voice without treatment, the NT-1A without any question. For the guitar, I was a bit astonished that in the blind test I picked the NT-1 as the "better" one; I expected the NT-1A to "win" here as well because normally guitars can also need that little presence push - but maybe it was the lack of that small bump around 150Hz which made the difference here. I'm using my NT-1A mostly for my upright bass now, and I also have to lower it around 200Hz a bit to not having the instrument sound too boomy. For my voice, those sibilants are a bit too much, so there the NT-1 would probably fit better - but I can eq it flat or use a de-esser, so... Here in Germany the NT-1A is hard to beat price-wise, and it's no wonder that it's the best selling condenser mike ever.

They sound pretty similar but as some one who has a fairly deep voice and has to go a bit breathy when I go high, I think the nt1-a is a better choice cause every time I hear vocals (talking or singing) I feel like it’s hard to ignore how much bass the nt1 has over the nt1-a and I think the extra boost does so much and it sounds a lot less muffled and kinda boring. plus I’m gonna go pick one up soon (the nt1-a) for around 150 so I’m very happy with this!!!

Used NT1-A for 4 months, then it died. Sent it back, got a new one and this died in one week. Sent it back. Got an NT1. I hope the higher build quality in this means it won't be faulty. Had mine since 2009, and since 2011 it's been left on... phantom powered, and connected to my DBX-286s all day and night, 24/7 almost 365. No issues at all, still works as well as when it was new. Which is odd, because we smoke in that room almost daily _(I reckon the foam saves it)_ Basically, we're a hellish environment for a condenser - but it's stood up to the mistreatment. Perhaps there were some bad batches though, it happens! Also, I know there are some fake Shure SM7B's floating around... could it be that there are some fake Rodes out there as well? I think the best explanation for repeated failures is : A) The phantom power source _(instability or power on/off crowbar spikes)_ B) A bad batch from Rode, due to component supplier changes C) Some of the better-looking, counterfeit, microphones out of China The biggest worry would be the phantom power. I'd get a scope/meter on that right away.

I told the guy at GC that I wanted something that isn't going to boost to low end and since I'm singing through a mic, into an interface, into a DAW, I want something that I can edit later, rather than doing it automatically. When it comes to wanting a particular thing from something, I'm happy to pay a bit more and get less nonsense out of it. NT1 is where it's at when you have the ability to edit a lower voice. U can tell you for a fact that the Nt1 should be they mic you but between these 2! The Nt1a is crap and on par with Beringher mics! However if your rooms not treated, get a Shure SM7b and Cloudlifter instead! It's much easier to make sound professional in the end! There are many, many reasons but the primary one is that no matter what you do, if you rooms not treated well the condenser WILL pick that up! I've tried it all over my 27yrs... And nothing works besides 100% singing in the right room! Back in the day, they used to have different rooms you don't in. Think about that! Just rooms to sing in! That's all they where there for! Why? That should tell you how'd important it is to have a great room, and if you can't.. Take the room out if the picture by using a dynamic mic! Even a Shure sm58 can sound better than a Neumann U47, because it produces less of the terrible untreated room sound in the recording. Some vocation have used that in real popular recordings that you hear now and after luck.. "No fucking way!"
@AudioHaze3 жыл бұрын
@@assshakerstudios549 In some ways I agree with you! If it comes down to it, working in an untreated room I would always reach for a dynamic, you can see I start the video with an SM57 for that exact reason. Although there are other reasons why a large diaphragm condenser may be advantageous, like working with stereo mic'ing, ambient mic'ing, or acoustic instruments. In these situations its difficult for a mic with a narrow image such as a a 58 or 7B to pick up all the frequencies on such a rich instrument. Condensers are also much more sensitive to sound pressure levels and could result in a more dynamic, rich recording. Also, when it comes down to it, a condenser mic is always a welcome and extremely important addition to any studio, and these are both great mics to go with! But yes, the room is king, especially for vocals :)

I am so overwhelmed...can you just tell me what is the best at home voice over mic ....? I am a broadcaster who now has to do VO from home in a closet...HELP! I have the NT1 do you think it is a good at home VO mic ?
@AudioHaze3 жыл бұрын
The NT1 will do fine as long as you have sound treatment (like your closet)! If you'd like to get a microphone that doesn't need sound treatment, the rode procaster, rode PodMic, or the Electrovoice RE320 would all be great and cost the same or cheaper than the NT1 :)

@@AudioHaze big help...there are so many good mics out there...seems everyone on Podcasts use the Shure SM7 but I don't think that is a good home VO mic? sorry I keep picking your brain...anyway...you are a rockstar!!!
@AudioHaze3 жыл бұрын
@@jmarietv Sorry for the late reply! SM7 is wonderful for voiceover, any dynamic will do well in an untreated room. NT1 has detail but can pick up lots of your room. The SM7 will pick up less. I have a video on the channel comparing the two if you'd like to see them directly compared :)

It really depends on your voice and what you want from the mic. NT1 boosts midrange and NT1a boosts more high end

It's me again lol, I heard some people on internet says nt1a is harsh is this really or it's just crisp? And what's better out of these for rap vocals I mean those modern rap vocals?
@AudioHaze3 жыл бұрын
I think its just crisp personally, I don't find it to be overly harsh, it does emphasize the high end a lot though imo

What do you think of the bluebird compared to the NT1?
@AudioHaze3 жыл бұрын
I don't know too much about the bluebird! I can't speak too much to them, but I don't often see them used in studio environments, they seem to be more a consumer microphones, not to say the NT1 isn't a consumer microphone, but I find they're more common to find in studio environments. Hopefully thats a little helpful haha

They sounded exactly the same except the NT1-A pickup a little more of the girls mouth noises. But in the end it comes down what's going thru the mic, your pre-amp and headphones.

Think you need a singer who isn't flat.. I mean it is hard to hear a flat note on flat mics like NT1 Hehe

I feel like the NT1 is the better overall mic. I heard it with hip hop vocals and it sounded almost as good as the legendary Neuman u87. But I think the NT1A sounded better for the female vocals.

Listen thanks for doing this video. Her is my story. I had a session singer come over to my studio who brought her own mic. It was the NT1A. I tried my own voice on it and LOVED it. I immediately ordered one. they were not in stock. I bought the NT1 (Black model). Man alive, I hated it. I thought I had been conned. I have been saying for years that these mics are very different, I have to do quite a bit of tweaking to make it feel like the NT1A. I am trying a mic preamp with it now. In hindsight. Get the mic that sounds good without tweaking. Whatever the price. you will be happier... Hard lesson learned. For my voice, it was the NT1A, not the NT1.
@AnonGuardians Жыл бұрын
I bought an NTG3 for voiceover/soundfx work but my voice is too rough and has to much bass for the NTG3 making mic placement tough. I ended up also getting a NT1A just for voiceover work. Mics can sound good for one voice type and bad for another its a thing.
