Kaurismaki is pure genius. Unfortunately, in present times, I don't think that his movies will find as many eager viewers as they deserve. Our age is very hostile to anything requiring patience. But the winds are shifting, I can feel it! A fascinating character...
@helsinkirenaissance7 жыл бұрын
But then again, you could say that Kaurismäki seems to have some kind of an advantage against the potential reluctance of hordes of ADD-viewers because a surprisingly large group of his films are between 60-85 minutes and they're all about having no wasted movements within a fairly tightly controlled enviroment that on top of all of that is frequently all in service of a genre premise being only slightly subverted. In other words, just like the manager would say in The Leningrad Cowboys: the problem we have is not a speed problem. The thing is that Kaurismäki refuses to ever make a strory about anything other than outsiders and multiplex viewers seem to favor the PROMKING SAVES THE WORLD form of storytelling which is more or less the polar opposite of what this finnish grizzly bear is doing.
you all prolly dont care but does anybody know a method to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my account password. I love any help you can offer me.

+P.W. Shelton Thanks for your comment. Yes, he has been an inspiration for us. If you are interested in seeing the film we made which was inspired by his style, then we have it on KZbin on our other channel; DEP Films. The short film is called "Vandaleyne".

I doubt it. Their films are weird, but still very linear and big budget successes. To be a Finnish auteur filming “losers” and in thrall to Ozu is a different thing entirely..

Wes Anderson seems to be a fan of his work but Kaurismäki is a MUCH better filmmaker. Doesn't need to show off and have a group of hipsters kiss his shoes all the time.

Oh no, what a pity you got Aki's comment wrong! (after 2:35 in the clip) His "Ota koppi" doesn't mean "Make a copy", but he's actually trying to encourage you by saying - and I'm paraphrasing of course: "Catch the ball and be the next one to run with it"...
@Myrosan0019 жыл бұрын
+hankm Thanks for clearing it out. That was a good way to translate it. Someone pointed it out to us just after we uploaded the video. I though "Well. It's too late now, since the video is out there." I'll try to add a caption over it instead. Maybe that can work

I think some people in Finland try to get people on sidetracks with bad or wrong translations because they, themselves are angry or jealous to foreigners because they are meeting Aki himself.

The Match Factory Girl was his best. The scene with the girl that nobody wanted to dance with will break you in two. Hollywood spends billions to try to evoke one tenth the feeling. There is nothing more incompetent in this world than Hollywood.

@1:52 To the question of why do you make films, he responds: "Minusta ei ollut mihinkään rehelliseen työhön." That means, "I was not cabable of any honest work.". Also, there is a sort of implication that it's still true. Also, the man is effin smashed. It's not just a few beers he has taken that day. I suppose that is Aki for you. Maybe he is serious, maybe not, but he will not play ball the way the press expects him to. He might have been more forthcoming if you continued with your questions further, but then again, maybe not. You buy him a beer, maybe he'll entertain you, maybe not. Effin c*nt a*hole :D Never worked with him, neither am I ever likely to do so given that I just touch computers for a living which he openly hates, but he really doesn't seem to have any love for PR, and who could blame him? I do wonder how it is to actually work with him? Although, given how he is, I hope not a single soul will ever tell us, unless he's a shit like Weinstein, but if not, let him be a curmudgeon and leave him to bring his amazing films to the rest of us! :)
