It just hit me that this place has been up and running through the Heian period (it opened *before* the Heian period started), the entire Warring States Period, Tokugawa's consolidation of power, the Bakumatsu and Meiji Revolution, and two World Wars. Wowza.

The Romans were still around as well. Throughout its existence the Eastern Roman Empire have managed to recover after they have lost their territories to the Arabs; and had experienced many disasters especially civil wars, the sack of Constantinople in 1204, and the Iconoclasm. They were battling against the Bulgars, Pechenegs, Magyars, Venetians, Croats, Cumans, Arabs, Turks and Normans. It is also mind boggling to think that this establishment was around when the city of Constantinople fell in 1453 and the Portuguese explorers discovered the New World 1488. It's really impressive to think that this establishment have been around for so long.

It's nice to know that despite how the hotel has survived for more than a millennia, they chose to update the look and feel of the place while keeping the traditions. That wooden sign with Aki's name at the front was amazing, and I could only imagine what other notable figures had their names written in those and kept in that hotel.

The reverence, care, and appreciation for old things is a stark contrast with the more western view of wanting the next new thing over and over. I thought the place itself, as well as all the attention to detail was amazing.

Idki, it made me a bit sad seeing all the renovations. It would be amazing if they would of just updated the original buildings and if they did renovations they would of stuck with the original style. It just kinda takes away from the whole 1,000 year old thing when there’s nothing that remains from that time.
@41tinman41
@41tinman41 2 жыл бұрын
@@rachelcookie321 I get the sentiment of preserving the original and authentic look of the hotel, but there are also standards that need to be upheld and kept up with. You gotta understand that the building has been through a lot of years, and that includes plenty of damage and wear. Then there's the disasters and wars that would have definitely taken a toll on it.
@rachelcookie321
@rachelcookie321 2 жыл бұрын
@@41tinman41 I understand that but you can remake it in the original style. Look at other old onsens or old Japanese castles that have been destroyed and rebuilt. They are fixed and updated while still looking like the original building built hundreds of years ago.

Yeah, that's more than what Americans can say to that. Don't get me wrong. We've been able to preserve a lot of historical stuff over the years, my favorite being the Civil War statues and such, but we haven't gotten everything. I think that this speaks more on the traditional values that the Japanese have on their historical stuff. And with that being said, sometimes the stuff we have preserved gets destroyed and that's depressing because that's apart of American history. It's important to preserve history as much as possible.

@@rachelcookie321 Venison is delicious and all, but Deer can be a gigantic pain in the ass. They are a prey animal, so when they run they don't run in a straight line but instead zigzag back and forth. I had a deer once run into the side of my car even after I slowed down to let it pass me. They're not idiots, but their way of getting away from predators has made them pretty susceptible to death by automobiles.

I've enjoyed similar places, but newer. Like 300 years old. An amazing experience that never fails to reset the soul. So jealous....

Honestly them letting you open up that door gong(was it that?) Was probably even more of an honor. Since the Guinness thing can be reprinted but the other thing had actual history "in it".
