A man who went to Akihabara to kill people drove into shoppers with a truck and went on a stabbing spree, killing at least seven people and wounding ten others, police said.
The attack occurred around twelve thirty on Sunday in one of the busiest areas of Tokyo. The massacre is the worst killing spree in recent years and came on the anniversary of a 2001 school slayings in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture. Police have arrested Tomohiro Kato a 25 year old resident of Shizuoka prefecture in the Akihabara massacre. He is currently being held at the Manseibashi Police Station. The man apparrently claimed to be part of a criminal gang and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department quoted Kato as saying he was tired of life and he went to Akihabara to kill people. The fatalities were six men and one woman. It is unclear whether the victims were killed by stabbing or by being hit by the truck.
Meanwhile in Akihabara people gathered in the evening to offer tributes to the victims in front of Sofmap. They placed beverages and flowers at the scene of the slayings as a memorial to the victims.
Fallout from the massacre is spreading rapidly among people who frequent Akihabara. "This is a horrible tragedy," said a frequent visitor to Akihabara who did not want to be identified. "I love Akiba, but the image of Akiba-kei will suffer because of this. I plan to come back here but I will be more cautious from now on".
According to the Japan Times there were 68 acts of random violence that resulted in serious injuries or death from 1990 to 2007. In January this year a sixteen year old boy attacked five people with kitchen knives in Tokyo's Shinagawa ward. In March, eight people were injured and one was killed when a man went on a stabbing spree at a shopping mall in Ibaraki prefecture.
The otaku geek culture associated with Akihabara was long overshadowed by the Miyazaki Incident, in which anime fan Tsutomu Miyazaki kidnapped and killed four girls. The 1989 incident linked otaku culture with violent antisocial behavior in the mind of the public in Japan.

Look at the stats man- Japan is one of the safest places to live in this world. this isnt a common thing in Japan. My Japanese co- workers at the Hight School I worked at there would have a group meeting just to talk about what to do about a student talking back to them. Its a different culture. Guns wont solve shit.

Kato was an otaku lol, he didn't kill those people being he disliked otakus. You're making a connection between two unconnected things. The dude was just emo because he was raised poorly and bullied in high school, and he wanted to go someplace where there was a lot of people to kill.

I'll correct you. No he wasn't a mobster, he just said he was. After he said that, investigations were occurring to see if that was true, and guess what, he wasn't telling the truth. He probably had something against the yakusa mafia, maybe that's why he said he was with them.

Was this an attack on otaku culture? Were otaku and cosplay people targeted? Was this a crime of hate?

Yakuza are basically mobsters. The American parallel would be what you can see in The Godfather. The difference is that in Japan the Yakuza, or "Yaks" as resident foreigers sometimes call them, are more public. Their top members are publicly known, the locations of their offices are publicly known, tabloids write articles about them all the time. Yakuza violence when it happens is generally targeted, not random like this guy or say an American-style drive-by shooting on a crowded street.

I have no right to write what i wrote down there, but who taught us to kill? Imagine that no one ever knew of death, that the word, its meaning would have never been here, because man made it. I see religion always taking people, but i think we should all know this, that it is humans who need to depend on ourselves and prevent people from committing horrible acts, because its what "man" made and created, not god, not anyone, only man
