The crime was committed in PARIS NOT JAPAN. the Japanese government wanted to pursue but couldn't go ahead without the case files that France didn't want to share. And because it had happened in a foreign country, there is no reason for Japan to even be interested but they were. There's a point to be made about violence against women and how it is overlooked, but you chose poorly with the case you chose.

Women don't report, plus they are growing up in a society where even assault, fondling or pressured sex is banalised. I remember reading Japanese female teenager magazines and honestly, it was disgusting. One example: this girl went to hang out with two of her seniors, they went to chill at the beach, they were coming back in the evening by car, they had played hard all day so the girl falls asleep. She wakes up with the driver on the backseat, fondling her breasts. While describing her story, she comments "He deserved to be slapped, no ? (lol)" and despite not thinking this is okay, she continues her story saying that because they're her seniors, if she were to try to refuse it'd be really troublesome so instead she thought to herself "Ah, well !" and let them both do her, in turn. That was the story of how she lost her virginity. The whole magazines were filled with banalised hypersexualisation and stories of abuses, and it was just all so normal... Very disturbing to read.

We don't know at all what the answer to that question is. Everyone is removing the humanity of the parents over the skewed traditionalist message of the video. They may of defended their son because he is their son. They may of defended him because they refuse to abandon him. They may of defended him because they were simply still in shock at the absurdness of the crime and hadn't fully taken in exactly what their son has done to their family. They may of done it in order to show the world they still stand behind family - and keep in mind...as much as you diss them and their system...they STILL let their daughter back in and were happy to have her back regardless of her views on traditionalism - And I say this as someone who agrees with your point. Japan is "safe" but if you really look into crime and the system here, you'll find that a lot of the time, criminals are let go with warnings. For example, two men broke into a news woman's house. The police let the two men go since they were "just being dumb". The woman even had to release a public apology. Hard to say the crime is low when cases are dropped left and right.

Sadly, it is pretty obvious that Yuki probably had undiagnosed learning disabilities which would not be good for the family so was probably not explored. The pressure on Japanese children by their parents even if they live outside of Japan is often the cause of mental health struggles, substance abuse and resentment. The sentence he got is a travesty of justice!

Wouldn't be surprised. Japan has a big stigmatisation of mental health issues, so in general Japan doesn't diagnos people very often. (This is in no way a defence of Yuki's actions, if that is what you got from my comment)

This is so common everywhere, that a free-spirited young woman is punished because she dares to follow her own path in life. The punishment can range from judgmental attitudes and disparaging remarks, up to and including banishment or death, depending on the family and/or the culture. It's sickening. RIP, Azumi.

The way i understand it, it's not that they don't care about their daughter because of her choice, or at all. They do, they took her back despite disagreeing with what she was doing and her basically making it clear she wasn't taking up the mantle like they wanted her too, after all. They defended their son in court that hard to basically save face (idk if there's a term for it in Japanese, heck, I'm not even 100% sure if I'm explaining it right, but here goes nothing), not just for them but for their eldest son who was, I'm going to assume, also be affected by this. And I'm sure you can say that the whole "he's family" thing also played some part in it. Even bad men love their moms and vice-versa as it were. I've seen that a lot personally. This case reminds me so much of two dear friends i have. Both are brothers and both sons of two doctors. Both were expected to carry on the family tradition. One gave in to the pressure and was always the good one. The other rather pursued his own dreams and was always the bad one. Until he could not take it any more and left. The son that left is now leading a normal life, while the one that gave in to the parents pressure (mostly from their mother) failed to become a doctor, was diagnosed with several disorders and childhood trauma and now lives on disability checks. They are not Japanese, but this shows how parents pressure can destroy a person.

I can only speak for myself but in Asian culture it is about legacy and a lot of the times the young are expected to take up and care for their parents as they get older. Which is why the pressure to become successful is so harsh. My parents themself told me I’m getting nothing in their will because I don’t want to become a doctor lol I expected as much. We’ve had this fight since high school where the only “approval” you can get is thru ur grades. I did well for myself lol but at the same time I’d rather be happy than pursuing something I don’t feel passionate about. In this generation it’s like sacrificing approval from family to be happy, and it’s not easy. I live in the west, which. Aah comes with its own implications among Asian families. but I can only imagine how hard it is to be in Asia with this strict traditionalism.

Would you consider exploring the case of the murder of Officer Gregory Neupert from New Orleans? Officer Neupert got shot by a drug dealer and in retaliation, the police raided Algiers and killed three people, two responsible for the murder and one innocent. The Neupert family never got closure and the suspects never got a fair trial. It's an absolute tragedy all around. Given how you focus on the victims first, I feel like you would give the case the proper respect it deserves.

The pressure of family tradition played a huge role here, and that the negative reinforcement Yuki faced to conform to the tradition exacerbated his mental instability. Watching Azumi walk away from her obligation to family only to be accepted with open arms after she failed to make it on her created an undeniable sibling rift of jealousy. From his actions it is clear Yuki felt trapped into accepting his obligation to family, and that he was not happy to not have the same choice that Azumi had to simply walk away from that obligation. The two points that has me scratching my head as to Yuki's mental condition when he committed the murder, is why steal a pair of his sister's panties and take them with him and why defile her intimate areas? I can see a predator like Ted Bundy doing something as depraved, but those actions point to someone who wants to remember their "victory" over something and points to some deeply seated hatred Yuki held towards Azumi.

Every time I try to get a better insight on what triggers people a lot of people misconstrue my thought process as being an attempt to justify when all we are doing is trying to put the mental pieces of the puzzle together. 😉

My gosh, this case is disgusting and the punishment is paltry.. My daughter lives in the area and it makes me fear for her that someone could do something so heinous and essentially get a slap on the wrist as far as I’m concerned.

This is so tragic. Parents can break their children and sometimes the break hard. Frankly I am disgusted by people who value what others say more than how their own family feels. Reputation isn't everything.

I know that when I lived in Japan from 1991-1994, they were still ashamed if a girl or woman was raped. So I imagine her line of work didn’t help with the lack of respect for his sister.

He took his own sisters undergarment and put it in his bag then tried to lie and cover up the fact that he killed Azumi a woman who had her whole life ahead of her he just had to kill her instead of talking to someone about his emotions and they still let him walk around free. I hope Azumi rests in peace..

I can kind of relate. Even as an American my `family' always compared me to other relatives. "Why can't you be more like `so and so?' They're successful, pretty ect" isn't a good thing to hear, regardless of where you live. It's hard to tune out and hurts. But given time *at least in the states depending on who you are* You just stop caring about what people thing or say about you and just be yourself, because if those people that said they love and care about you *ACTUALLY DID* love and care about you, they wouldn't say those things and would let you be you.

Sadly enough, I have to agree, that brother creeps me out too. Equally as sad is the pressure put upon children to live up to the parents expectations. The older generations want to uphold long standing traditions and the younger generation isn’t interested in it. I see that here in America too. Rest In Peace beautiful young lady.
