I was 10 years old when I first saw this on VHS. Changed my life forever. To what I thought was a "cartoon".

You are right because Tron was made in 1981.

I would like to know how they animated the natural light in the film in the foreground. I know how they do it in the background, but with so many cells in play I would like to know how they got the natural glow in the cells that are closer to front without using computer animation.

Various inks and light colors. Otomo coined this trick I think! There is a nice video explaining it vaguely on KZbin! Just look up akira lighting

im not sure i know tron used a trailing light effect from the vehichles in their movie although i dont know when tron was made. The reason I made this video was to discover more about the light trail effect as i wanted to make an effect with video editing software and needed to know more about it to know how to do it (what to call the effect) but i havent discovered much too be honest :(

Did akira first introduced the Light Stream?

+trulgn the effect is called light trails. It's supposed to visually represent what happens when light burns in the human eye (or a light sensitive surface ie film).

+trulgn Reading the Manga helps a lot, the power is just the force that drives physics, chemistry, biology etc. Akira is the laws of physics incarnate, and that's what happens to Tetsuo at the end, which is why he becomes a universe, he is just the laws of physics that govern the reality he became. The explosions are special kinds of big bangs and worm-holes, the blast that destroyed neo-tokyo just took it to another dimension, the dimension Akira might have become. Kei mentions that if an amoeba were to gain the power of a human all it could do is destroy at an enhanced capacity, she is saying Tetsuo is an amoeba compared to the power he wields. The manga is much much much better, the movie is like they took a bunch of random scenes from the first two books and combined them in no particular order and yeah, the movie is just the first 2 out of 6 chapters.

What is Akira? To make it really simple Akira is the little boy who did destroy Tokyo and will destroy Neo-Tokyo at the end of the movie. But if you mean what is the Akira project. This is more complex but to make it simple, I would say that it's an experimentation conducted by the military to take a new prospect (Tetsuo) and trigger inside him the same power Akira had(all human beings have this power on different level.) and try to understand that power and to control it. But as you can see Tetsuo doesn't want to play the guinea pig. I would suggest you that you read the manga it's much more detailed and a little bit different from the movie but nonetheless it will help you understand the story better.

I hate this dub version. I watched the original so many times every line of dialogue is burned into my brain. This just sounds weird.
