I don’t think the influence of the anime can be disputed at all! Watching it for the first time is a core anime memory for me. I was surprised to learn how much legwork the manga did in normalizing manga/anime in the US though. I plan on talking about it more later but this manga really helped lay the groundwork for the American manga market. And it’s one of the few manga series to have an official full-color release at that. It’s interesting that the manga doesn’t get more love but hopefully I can help change that at least a little.
