I should also add the destructive side of the akita, they will chew everything, both my dogs did, even if left them for an hour, I ended having to take them up to my mums if I needed to go out, my sister took them when I was working , u need alot of time for them. I once made a mistake of leaving Elle for 3-4 hours on her own in the house , she would be around 6 month old, she ate everything, I mean everything, the carpet was rolled up and double mattress was pulled off the bed and into the hall way, she was like Houdini, could get into every cupboard and open every door, there was packs of flour every where, everything out the food cupboard s, pasta juice bottles chewed up wi juice leaking everywhere , and my best pair of high heels in amougst it all lol. she was never left alone again untill later years.

Hi I've never had much dealings with chow chows, but they are lovely dogs too. akitas tend to be quite aloof and go through a stage around 9 months where they try and dominear you, especially females. with my first akita Elle ,she was difficult with me but u have to stand your ground, she eventually learned I was leader of the pack. my second akita female also I got when Elle was 5 year old her name is Lara, Lara didn't try and dominear me, she went through a stage at 9 month to 1 year where she went for Elle a few times 3 times, I was really worried, she gave no warning I would just be cuddling Elle and it was like pure jealousy she just pounched on Elle grabbed her by the neck , caused a small wound, luckily my sister was in the same room so we could grab the both of them apart coz it was like a wild cat fight . I mean I was used to them playing rough all the time but this was very different.

continued.... so I went and spoke to my vets and they suggested I got Lara spayed , I was all for having to rehome Lara I was so upset and what she had done to Elle. however I got her spayed , and since then totally changed. she never went for Elle again, although I always fed them in seperate rooms just in case because that had been the cause of one incident. but Elle and Lara were best pals got on brilliant , Elle sadly got put to sleep 6 year ago, but Lara still going strong, Lara brilliant with kids and dogs when introduced properly, Elle I had to watch with kids, couple incidents where she gave a bit warning to kids so from then I was wary . make sure u have good dog insurance though, I'm sure u will have already, both my akitas have had problems with legs, and insurance paid out petplan great .
