I remember back in 2018ish when AKK release 1.2W vtx and its considered rather high power 😅

Great review Andrew! I have always liked AKK's VTXs I have a few of their older high power 30 x 30 VTXs and I will definitely get the same one you have because even if you DO go long range with analog, the 4W VTX will be more than plenty powerful. Looking forward to the next video for the smart audio test.

Thanks Raven. Smart Audio setup is exactly like the Race Ranger kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJuyp2iefbqsa8U Probably no need to repeat it.

I fly modest long range, but still agree that high output power is something to avoid if we can. However, I do like to run vtx units with a couple of notches higher output capacity than the one I actually use. They seem to give me more stable and reliable performance than smaller siblings screaming at the top of their lungs. That would be the justification I can see for mammoths like these.

Let’s be real, these were designed for a “single use” mission 👀

I could see a use for a ground based vehicle, I have one that frequently pushes the power limits of high power VTX's when needing to penetrate dense foliage, and even tall grass which can be a challenge in wet weather. I think in that situation the battery capacity is also more suited, aircraft would probably cross the weight/range benefit too early in the venture to utilise the full power potential. It's interesting that they have achieved better power efficiency over their previous generation class A PA transmitters in this part of the spectrum too, I wonder just how they have done it? Cheers, and thanks for posting..

I never had great luck putting the video transmitter behind the motor on the Ranger (at least without an LC filter)

One sneaky issue with a tail vtx on any normal fixed wing is the fact that the battery tends to block your line of transmission when you try to head home. Other than that, the laws of physics should have no objection to that particular antenna position. I use it a lot on similar models flying long range.

Surely the point of dimenising returns come into place?

Yes you would assume so

@@AndrewNewton Yes. Inverse square law is the main factor here. To double the range, you need to quadruple the output; to triple, 9x; etc. If you get 2km with a 2.5w vtx, you'd need 10w to get 4km, 25w to get 6, etc

BTW none of the video transmitters are legal in Australia. The spectrum management agency allows low interference potential devices (LIPD) to be used unlicensed on 2.4 and 5.8 GHz however only for very specific modulation and bandwidth. Video is not allowed at any power on these frequencies as it is far too wideband to fall under LIPD rules. 100mW is just as illegal as 10W. The 36dbm (4W) power limit is for wifi or other narrowband frequency hopping modulation modes. Luckily as the SMA is a small agency there is no practical way to enforce these limits. 10W however, would probably attract some attention unless you’re flying in Ukraine.
@AndrewNewton9 ай бұрын
Thanks Stephen. I guess you have to be seriously interfering with a crucial transmission to come to their attention.

I had a few AKK vtx, only the 1200mw works fine. Better spend your hard earned cash on Rush or TBS.
