Andrew,,,great pair of videos. Thanks for your continued dedication to this area of flying. I wish I would have had these two a few years back when I first gave this venture a shot:-). I am just about ready for my first flight trial but have one question (and hope you are still monitoring). I am using a wing this time around. I very much understand your comments/instructions of the +4 degree addition to the Fixed Wing level trim line of the Mechanics tab in the PID page of INAV and its purpose. It’s necessary to fly the bird:-). My question is as follows. Before we get into the INAV setup,,,the craft has to be a tested/proven flyer (which means that this amount of elevator is ‘tweaked’ in physically to the airframe to fly). However,,,once I have the bird flight proven and we start the INAV phase of the build,,,do we physically remove this elevator pitch (with wing elevons flat with the rest of the airframe) and let the INAV settings take over (once the setup is complete)? May sound like sort of a naive question,,,but it is a detail that I wanted to make sure of. Thanks so much.
@AndrewNewton3 күн бұрын
Good question. Yes keep the same amount of elevator reflex you added in the test flights and start with +4º FWPT. There are two factors at play here. 1 - Flying wings always require reflex in the overall airfoil shape to stop them rotating over the nose due to the lack of a tail. That comes from either the airfoil design or your added elevator reflex. It is best to dial this in using the pushrod lengths. BUT if you enable "Continuously Trim Servos..." INAV will look at your stick positions while flying and save the new servo midpoints. 2 - All airfoils need some "angle of attack" or a few degrees of positive angle to fly level and maintain altitude. The Fixed Wing Level Trim takes care of the angle of attack requirement (and board mounting discrepancies in the pitch axis).
@martybaecker56122 күн бұрын
Thanks a bunch Andrew. This will be a great project. I have the wing flyable right now,,,with the next step of adding all the iNAV hardware, etc. I really can’t wait and this little detail was the last piece of the puzzle. Take care and I’ll let you know how this Texas bird flys. Again,,,,thanks for making these two videos for they made it all come together also. The written word is great but the videos seemed to be the icing on the cake😊

I'm not into FPV or camera-tracking doobries (I'm mainly a glider nut, so... flaps, variable camber, etc.), but this kind of application should (hopefully) alert more radio manufacturers to the importance of providing a couple of good slider controls besides the usual battery of (cheap, largely useless) 2- and 3-position switches on their non-specialist transmitters.

The comments about channel 5 highlight the continued need for the ELRS project to fix this issue. The arm function should not be a channel at all. It's just a one bit flag in the data packet that is not even part of the normal 10 bit channel data. In the early days of ELRS it would have been necessary to use a channel on the radio to pass the arming status to the Tx RF module. Even today that is a valid option for backwards compatibility, but the actual bit flag in the OTA data packet should never have been treated as a traditional channel. Instead, the original implementation should have allowed for mapping any Tx channel as the arm input and then allowed mapping the arm output onto any output channel in the receiver. This would have allowed more flexibility configuring models on the Tx, and fixed wing users could simply not map the arm flag to any receiver output. The problem is that they never had fixed wing applications in mind or frankly anything else other than multirotors. Now that ELRS is serving as the actual RF foundation for new products from Jumper and RadioMaster, they really need to coordinate and fund a code cleanup effort that will get rid of the legacy channel 5 conflicts. Update EdgeTX and ELRS so the serial data stream between the Tx and its RF module includes out-of-band data like the arm flag and then update the EdgeTX or ELRS Lua to allow configuration of a switch for arming *without* controlling a conventional channel.
@AndrewNewton9 күн бұрын
Yes an alternative "ELRS armed" method would be better.
