Yes, it's Akkadian. Our reconstruction of Sumerian phonetics is still largely hypothetical, as the Sumerian language has no known relationship with other languages and remains an isolate. As a living language it was replaced by Akkadian already in the late 3rd millennium BCE, since then it was used only for official, religious and school texts (like Latin in medieval Europe).

This doesn't seem to be Sumerian. The Sumerians called Ishtar as "Inanna" while the Akkadians used the name Ishtar. Also, some of the words seem to have ended with -um, which only occurs in Akkadian rather than Sumerian. Correct me if I'm wrong though, I'm not 100% sure...

Ishtar is an Akkadian (Semitic) goddess, the Sumerians Goddess of Love and War was Inanna 𒀭 𒈹. Akkadian and Sumerian are totally different languages, they just used the same writing system. They are as different as say in the modern world, Turkish and Arabic. (Not that Turkish has anything to do with Sumerian, please don't go up that road!)

This is very similar to Aramaic/Assyrian language. After all, Akkadians eventually became Assyrians. The Akkadians assimilated into Sumerian culture, then Babylonian, and then Assyrian which exist today but are small in numbers.

Ishtar was also an Assyrian goddess also, i guess she stuck around for a few thousand years.

But the language has nothing to do. Sumerian is still a language isolate, and the only thing in common that could make them sound similar is probably a Sprachbund effect.
@LoQathar
@LoQathar 9 жыл бұрын
No it isn't, if not it would already be considered. No academic linguist believes Sumerian and Semitic languages are related, it's like trying to relate Spanish and Japanese. Common lexicon and sounds mean nothing, that's a phenomenon known as sprachbund.
@eurostar0711
@eurostar0711 9 жыл бұрын
I dont think the languages need to be related, over a few thousand years any language would change even among the same people. Spanish was very different in the 2nd century than it is now. Hebrew for example was different 2000 years ago, since then they have adopted the Assyrian alphabet. British English is different than American English and American hasnt been around for 300 years yet so imagine how different the language would be in another 700 years. So, Sumerian, Akkadian and Assyrian languages CAN share the same lineage without having the languages be related. As an Assyrian, i know that some of us know Akkadian and Sumerian, our recently formed Assyrian Defensive Forces use Akkadian on their flag, and we name our children with Akkadian and Sumerian names like Ishtar for example.

This sounds like Sumerian almost spoken with an Akkadian accent...I definitely applaud whoever this guy is for reading an ANCIENT LANGUAGE which has been dead for thousands of years, but certain pronunciations don't sound as natural. For instance, many modern linguists believe that voiced stops (g, d, etc.) were actually voiceless (k, t, etc.), and notated voiceless stops (k, t, etc.) were voiceless AND aspirated (kh, th, etc.), as evidenced by numerous examples of Akkadian~Sumerian word exchanges and loans. But oh well, who knows how it might have actually sounded...
