Guided Auger Boring (GAB) is a popular and cost‐effective trenchless method to accurately install steel casing for underground utilities, water lines, and sanitary sewers. The method combines pinpoint accuracy with a pilot tube installation to control line and grade and the excavation process of horizontal auger boring.
During the pilot tube installation, the soil is displaced by a slant‐bill steering head while thrust and rotation pressures are monitored in the launch shaft. Monitoring pilot tube installation data allows the contractor to probe the ground for potential obstructions. At the same time, the soil’s in‐situ properties return to their natural state if a pilot tube pull‐back is necessary.
Installed pilot tubes are connected to the steel casing pipe with a secure connection allowing the casing to follow the pilot tube path.
In harder ground, a Guide Rod Swivel (GRS) 50 is used to increase to the final casing diameter. The assembly comprises a universal bearing swivel, an interchangeable cutter head, and a pilot tube guide rod. Combined they are able to withstand up to 50 tons of continuous thrust to excavate the stiff and difficult ground. The cutter head features retractable wings cutters, and a bearing swivel that connects to the auger string and can be pulled back from the casing is an obstacle is encountered and reconnected with the guide rod without losing line and grade. Lubrication can be run from the reception shaft through the pilot tubes and guide rod to flush the cutter head.
