Wonderful review! And to those saying this is a gimmick: You basically have 3 ukuleles in this 1 instrument. A low G and a high G, and both. There are songs that sound wrong in a high G, and you can just loosen the high G and clip it away from the fretting area, same goes for low G if the song calls for low G. And then you have this doubled gs for a new expression of songs. I'll be getting one for sure! My struggle has been switching between ukes when I'd rather have one that I can rely on for when I need to travel or go somewhere.

Nice review and comparison Steve. I have worked on and played several five string ukuleles. They not only have a rich sound that compliments certain musical pieces very well. With a little practice either the high G or low G or both can be picked which gives them some extra versatility for players willing to put in the practice needed to get the most out of them.😊

Tenors ukes are really nice. Ironically, I have a tenor (not a 5 string though) on the way to review as well. This looks like a really great instrument for the price (Aklot seems to do well with ukes of all sizes). The 5 string idea is kinda cool... but it also seems kinda gimmicky. I'm not sure how many times one would really choose a 5 string over a low G (provided you had both handy of course) or even a high G uke. I suppose it might be a nice option for certain songs but probably not the best choice if you're only going to have one uke. In any case, it definitely sounds more full than the high G tuning. Great comparison Steve.

Thanks! On a different note, last night I discovered that the Republic of Texas CBG Festival was yesterday! I presumed they would not have it this year so I didn't event think of checking when it would be. Hopefully, next year things will be better and we may cross paths there again!

@@stevesstrings5243 Yeah. I found out on Friday. I figured it would've been cancelled. I didn't make the trek either... and I'm guessing they probably didn't get a great turnout. Maybe next year. 2020 has been a bad year for live music.

Steve, even though I subscribe to your channel I somehow missed this review. I found it today doing a google search for the Aklot 5 string. You answered several questions I still had and after listening to the sound difference I'm sold. I was going to just add the fifth string to my next build but a cigar box would never sound as good as this.
@stevesstrings52434 жыл бұрын
I have thought about that for a CBG as well. I have also considered converting a classical guitar to a six-string octave ukulele with the 1st and fourth strings being doubled.

@@stevesstrings5243 After getting parts together to build one I decided to order the Aklot 5-string and will receive it soon. There are too many great features in the Aklot for me to experiment around with, i.e. the truss rod, gig bag and resonating body (vs. a Cigar Box). I'll use the parts on another 4-string tenor with a Texas theme.

I like the sounds of it. The handy part of having a 5 string uke is I can play music arranged for both Low G and high G. However, I do find the headstock side heavier and it will tip left. It takes a bit more precision to fret the 4-5 strings accurately when playing. I needed to adjust the action.

I need help! Is your 5 string ukulele all nylon strings, or is the low g a single steel string? My Lanikai 5 string was set up like that. Anyway, I couldn't find a 5 pack of strings for replacement on this uke. I don't mind buying a separate low g, but my question is: should I get nylon for the low g, even though it came with a steel string and the rest was nylon? Need advice, please. Please recall, it comes with low g and high g. PS: Wouldn't having a low and hi g string with both nylon be easier than the low as steel?
@stevesstrings52433 жыл бұрын
The low G string is a wound string with a nylon core. There are no single steel strings. You could use a solid nylon or fluorocarbon G string but they will probably be a thicker gauge than the wound G string. That means you might need to widen the slot in the nut. People use wound strings because they are denser than unwound strings. That means you can get the same tone with a thinner string. The gauge string for the low G is usually .028 or .029 which is the same as a wound D string from a classical guitar string set. I suggest you stick with the wound string.

Steve, I really liked your video but I have a suggestion. You should change the 4 string uke to having a low G string and then compare it to the 5 string. I have most of my tenor ukes in low G and am interested in seeing if a normal uke with a low g sounds much different than the 5 string alternative. I suspect there is not too much difference. Gust a guess, but I have been wrong before!!!!!
@stevesstrings52433 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, Ralph! You may be right. I think the low G rings out more than the high g, at least the way I play it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Nice sound. But it seems to be difficult to change the strings, I am afraid. How does that work? Thanks for the Video!
@stevesstrings52433 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking! You can do it! To replace the strings, you first remove the old ones. Then put a string down through the respective hole in the bridge, pull it out the sound hole enough so that you can tie a knot in the end, then pull it back snug against the underside of soundboard. Then attach the string to the tuning machine. That's it! Be sure the knot is large enough so it wont pull through the hole and don't leave a long "tail" on the string, or you it may buzz against the soundboard.
@Martin_Entertains4 жыл бұрын
I agree with @poorness studios in that it's intriguing, but kind of gimmicky. I've got the Aklot tenor with low G and I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I can't see it being worth the 25% increase in tuning time that it adds to every session. I would think the extra string would limit your choices when it comes to replacements. Thanks for the review 😁
@stevesstrings52434 жыл бұрын
I don't think of it as a gimmick. Rather, its an attempt to give a different sound to the instrument. Just like 12-string guitars a still guitars, but the paired strings give it different sound. Thanks for watching and commenting!
