Very nicely explained, Darick, but a note to the more recent viewers. There are a small number of changes since this video was done in the 2nd edition of Black Powder. A couple of these are 1) skirmishers no longer get a +1 benefit to their shooting score, and 2) enfilade no longer doubles the hits, but instead any misses are re-rolled.

8:46--"The base value for infantry is 36 points for a standard sized infantry battalion..." says the chart. Dunno how this relates to other numbers on the chart. Reminds me of the weapons chart for Breakaway Games' RT simul Waterloo:NLB. Its pdf manual had values for base damage ranging from 24 for "poor" infantry to 38 for "elite." An asterisked note says: "* Base Damage is the number of hits a target sustains from the indicated weapon for each animated soldier that fires in the unit. The “Damage Modifier” is applied to the Base Damage. For example, 100% of 38 is 38; 90% of 38 is 34; 20% of 38 is 8. The range from the firing unit to the enemy then further modifies these base damages The base damage changes more quickly for muskets than for rifles over the same distance." Does anyone know what the Base Damage number means? No doubt Breakaway, which based its engine on Sid Meiers's Gettysburg and Antietam, had borrowed some of its combat details from miniatures. But they don't indicate precisely how these numbers are calculated and applied. Does each "hit" in Black Powder represent 36 casualties, or some relative effect on unit morale? Thanks.
