Yes, artillery could be devastating in certain situations but various factors restricted their effectiveness and it seems there's general agreement that musketry caused most casualties during the Napoleonic Era. Direct evidence is scanty but Brent Nosworthy's The Bloody Crucible of Courage provides casualty reports ( some relative to ammo expenditure) from several Napoleonic and US Civil War battles which indicate that infantry ranged fire did most of the damage. These reports also support the view that all weapons during this black powder period were woefully inaccurate or ineffective; it's estimated that less than one round in a hundred actually hit a human target during the Napoleonic period. At Vittoria it supposedly took 800(!) rounds to hit a Frenchman, although stats may have been distorted by Redcoats disposing of their ammo deliberately to provide an excuse to retire from the firing line (to loot the French baggage train perhaps?).
