This extract from Act I is Akram Khan's take on the famous "madness" scene in the ballet Giselle. Here, Giselle (Tamara Rojo) is overwhelmed with heartbreak, grief and sadness, after discovering that the man she loves has betrayed her.

This is a subtle yet smart reference to Giselle's heartbeat during the Mad scene. And the men circling around is a reflection of her mind, thinking about the people around her whilst filled with doubts and sudden trust issues.

It's open to a number of different interpretations, which is what makes it so very intriguing. You could perceive this as a reflection of the way in which Giselle's friends attempt to rally around her...or you could also perceive this as a reflection of Giselle's internal despair, seeing herself as hopelessly trapped by the class system which has separated her from the man she loves and whom she believed loved her.

I have no knowledge of ballet; I came here from a clip and it caught my curiosity, wondering about the differences between the old and new versions of this Madness scene from Giselle. Watching Nunez' madness dance and this one, I feel the difference in how Nunez' felt like watching Madness from the perspective of an outsider, while Khan's version it felt more internal, as if I'm seeing madness itself within the character's heart. It's beautiful that throughout the years, different versions and interpretations of certain emotions give this tragic feeling that would leave me misty eyed, despite being a naive audience who had no knowledge of the story of Giselle herself.

I've seen the full recording 20 or 30 times. Totally mesmerising. By far the best ballet I've ever seen. The lighting, in particular, is the most effective I've ever seen in any production in any theatre at any time. A big thank you to Mark Henderson and Tim Yip. Looking forward to seeing it live in a couple of weeks.

I have not liked anything that Akram Khan has done until I saw his Giselle Willis. Why would those angry Brides on the other side be so nice and sweet? It was always a question for me and he nailed it. And this?! They created the madness so that she didn't have to do the same old mad scene that we are addicted to. Damn you covid-19
