That intro music sounds a bit too cheerful considering the subject matter.

One thing that’s key to remember about early TV and radio is the absolutely insane amount of regulation. For instance, until the late 1950’s, it was at least nominally illegal in the US to portray criminals as sympathetic characters or to show police officers, clergymen, and politicians as being part of a corrupt system; individuals could be “villains,” but they had to be shown to be the exception, rather than the rule. They may not have been allowed to pair grim imagery with dramatic/sad music for fear of “disturbing” the public. I agree with you that the tone is off.

His name was Bub Cowart and he lived in Alameda in the late 1960's and early 70's- - - I knew him well, what a character !

Within seconds they are high enough to thinking they’ll shatter every bone in their body, and that’s why they didn’t let go..

Exactly. It's one of those times when you have to make a decision within 1.5 seconds or you are dead. Those that hesitated reached the point of no return quickly.

they're 19 and they're turned into mental putty at that point. probably told to hold on and so they held on. i'm not cut out for following orders and would have been one of the dudes who let go early as hell. nothing about that ship or the dudes in it are worth my life.

Very sad. Around 0:56 they must have known their fate. Like the opening scene of the film Enduring Love (2004) featuring a man falling to his death from a hot air balloon

there were 12 men on the line, pulling guy ropes with wooden handles. 9 either let go or had the handles yanked out of their hands the instant the ship jerked upwards. one broke a leg in the fall. before the last 3 knew it, they were too high to survive falling. Cowart had a leg hold. Henton and Edsall didn't, and couldn't hold on for long.
