So, some context for those who don´t really know by now. The game had a really big change when the 1.0 update came to the game, changing everything and creating the class system with the jetpack and drone and stuff. And the game really suffered because of that, mostly because the jetpack was the better option between the other two cause of the better mobility it gave to the one using it. But before all that, the game really was centered around customizing and playing the way you really wanted, and thanks to that players started to find new ways of playing (Tele-Axe, Trip Wire + Wooden Box) and you can even kill someone with a snow ball (And you can react to it by hitting it and trowing it back against the one who throw it. So yeah, the video really only speaks scratching only the top of all the game history and leaving lots of stuff that kinda were the real stuff that throw everything to the garbage at the end. The price thing was only a first problem, but eventually lots of other stuff were the thing that drive everyone to leave.

@@syarifht5929 Yeah, the game kinda suffered because of the developers didn´t really know how to balance some stuff. Lots of people were asking for changes in the W + M1 strategy, or the Tele-Axe (It was removed with a patch wich wasn´t really a good idea at the end), and other stuff that also happen were: -No big changes in the game -The new electronics powers were useless (There was one that literally make you ultra small, it was useless AF because it make you do so little damage, like 50 per hit.) -The price tag that eventually was removed (This is when I started to play the game).

Yeah, I played with 2 friends recently doing 1v1's with 1 person as the announcer. The game was still fun, but the class system just felt worse than the old system. I can understand why a change like that would kill the game.

I second this, started playing because of a friend around the time it went free. The 1.0 "class system" rework absolutely ruined the game for me, have not played it since 1.0 released. I hope someone creates a pre-release private server when the game finally shutters it's doors

Had so much fun in this game. Was a top OCE player. I think something that made the game fail is that how hard it is to beat a good player in this game. In games like Warzone, you can get the drop on a better player because of the low Time-to-kill. In a game like Darwin, even if you get a free hit on a better player, you're not going to survive the ensuing 1-4 minute fight. Ultimately, this frustrates new and low-skill players, ending up with the game not being able to grow at a sustainable pace.

Same with naraka Im realizing. I love naraka but the fighting battle royale genre is immensely ruined by the skill gap…. It will forever keep these styles of games “niche” because they’re not as simple and casual to start playing :(

Darwin Project is still, to this day, my favorite Battle Royale game of all time. I really wish indie multiplayer games succeeded more often, feels like all of the ones I fall in love with end up getting shut down soon after. Darwin Project, Gigantic, they all fall to other titles for reasons that are sometimes just out of the control of the devs. Now granted, I didn't even know the game had a price until I watched this video, but I never paid for it, and it seemed like it was relatively active when I was playing. Ah well. You really do hate to see it.

As someone who loathed the br genre, this game in its beta days were amazing. Sure, the gane director xould take favorites and do their best to guarantee a one sided win, but the combat's back and forth with its mobility, dodging, tp, parrying, whacking arrows out of the air, etc, felt so unique and there was always counterplay against better geared players. One of the saddest fates of a multiplayer game.

8:30 Darwin actually went came out to early access in March 2018 to the public and went free to play in April 2018 for PC around the time they held the big streamer invitational with shroud and forsen and a few others, which is what the huge spike in activity was, it did take until july 2018 though for it to go free to play on xbox though, they seemed to realise pretty quickly charging for the game was a no go. Video is put together well though and it definitely covers some of the issues the overall concept had, I put 4k hours into the game and casted alot of their tournaments, but admittedly a good half of that time was during a rough period of low activity that ran into community based tournaments and alike to keep people interested and alot of scrims, but release was when it became impossible to find a game, some regions like sydney and US west never truly thrived either which was a shame so west players eventually found themselves forced onto east to play. Many bigger streamers that enjoyed it wanted to wait out full release but with activity dipping they made some big changes that put many off when they did finally return to see how it turned out and many just didn't even know it fully released in januar 2020 until it ws too late as development shut down only 3 months later in may just after lockdowns started where the company is Also the 10 player vs 100 player thing too, as much as darwin games where supposed to be fast paced over quickly they sometimes ran into 30mins plus, tournaments especially many would wait out sudden death to a sometimes 10 man fight, people running away and then the chaser getting vultured was common with the radar system, alot of small things that unfortunately was the undoing of the general concept, quick smaller games. But the chat interactions and voting and betting system they had was great for streaming I have to admit, I'm still waiting too see another game that truly manages to pull out as much interaction for viewers aswell as the players as darwin managed, seeing people hyped in tournaments that 5k people bet darwin currency on them from various peoples streams watching them gave some rounds alot of energy and entertainment. Hopefully some day another game manages the same or darwin gets the overhaul it deserved.
@TabzBB
@TabzBB Жыл бұрын
I absolutely loved this game and thought an actual competitive scene would have been really interesting. I'm my opinion having the chat and viewers fully being able to influence the game was fun but not only that in a competitive setting it would mean players would not only to have been good in game but, outside too, by doing this gaining favourites outside would grant in game advantages too from chat.

Shame this died, the simplicity was so good but they tried to pull it in too many directions. The director never added much (and made it harder to get matches) and these classes didn't even exist when I played! They had a really great combat system with the axe and arrow attacks only, and some really fast mobility on top of that with bounce pads and the like. But seems they didn't know what they wanted and tried doing anything they could to keep their declining playercount.

Something about Darwin Project some new players don't understand is that getting materials is just as fun as fighting in a battle and winning. Whether you lose or not (especially in the full release) doesn't matter, you don't feel like you wasted time because you get into an upgrade pattern, so it's not pointless to gather materials just to die because people automate it by getting into a loop/pattern. It's also a social and local feeling game that is arguably the most fun game to play online in 2022.

The death of this game shows just how broken, toxic, and predatory the free-to-play model is. The only price tag that any video game should ever have on it is the one for buying it up-front, but your average person is so brainwashed into the supposed virtues of free-to-play that they choose it instead, kind of like a person who stays in a relationship with their abusive partner because the gaslighting and manipulation they suffer is all they know and they've been tricked into thinking it's a good thing.

I loved being the show director XD I used to make people so pissed off, while also making sure that the fight was super even, I'd check the players, see the player with the least ammount of supplies, and lead them to a cashe to help them catch up. And if a player was too far ahead, I'd sprinkle just a bit of chaos onto them. Gravity, speed, leading them to another player, only to make that player invincible, etc. and if I ever saw a person hiding, I'd just nuke that zone. It was so fun. XD

I was a show director for A LOT of time, was my first intro In the streamer world. And what actually kill the game is... The game itself. Combat was rewarding; but not FUN, how i know? Easy, late game is a mess. 6/10 people in a small ring is a vertical fight when people fly like no gravity the moment you hit with an axe. Also some players get salty the moment you touch the situation, even in tournaments when audience can decide fate of a player. Not even talking how tracking it was SO FREE...

I’ll be honest. Me and a homie played the game A LOT when they had Duos. And even would get into a party with our two other friends to do a sort of Co-Op survival in the Battle Royale. We stopped playing when the Jetpack came out cuz it really messed with the flow of the game. Hell, the implementation of the heat factor- where instead of snow the players would be put in a tropical area randomly- was absolutely not a bad change compared to it. And not to mention that they seemed to have gotten rid of duos around that time, so the game was just for pure solo. And that killed the game for me and my friends. I honestly just hope the devs can bring back the OG style soon or something.

I played Darwin from very early on, and despite hating most BR games I really enjoyed it. Many of the games choices, such as the smaller player count, hunting/tracking, and crafting instead of random loot drops gave it a more tactical feel. Every choice you made, where to go, what resources to gather, what to craft, how you used the weather all of it mattered. I loved this game until its low player count caused the devs to push it in a more typical BR direction. It went from players suriving to being some weird scifi showdown that relied way too much on the flash tech upgrades. I get why they did it but I still wish they had leaned more into the low tech survival side. I wanted more hand made weapons like the bows and ax. More tracking, hunting, and hiding options. Maybe a desert map that flipped the hot cold mechanic or a jungle map that played with some other weather effect. There was so much they could have done with the original concept it was a shame.

as someone who religiously played this game daily for about a month after it realeased, the gameplay was amazing, the pricetag was the main reason stopping new players from joining. sure, it feels unfair to be shot in the head with an arrow lategame and just die, but being on the other end of that bow, even if it was just a lucky shot, was the most exhilarating feeling ever. the game wasnt perfect by any means but for a 10-player game, you constantly felt like you were in a predator movie, either as the predator, or more likely, the innocent son-of-a-gun who got caught up in the fight. TL;DR, very good game, died cos it werent free

It was by far one of my favorites. Fights over the electronics, or when everyone is in the zone that a director closes or nukes, along with the pure skill axe/bow combat that’s about as fighting game-ish as BRs come. I def think a lot of it was limited playerbase so the new player experience was okay in beta but people got v good v fast. Still amazing if you got into a lobby that was competitive. Shoutout Gomen and Guts, big fuck you to Jotobo

As someone who played on launch, I can safely say that I got tired of the game when I got 3rd partied 3rd of my match in a single game. Games would play out by one player creeping on other waiting for him to get into the fight and kill a victor who didn't have time to recover from the first. There was a unforgiving health system in play where you cloud survive eather 3 axe hits or 2 headshots from arrow and you would be out. Health regen was only available at campfire or trough special ability so quick fixes are not an option. Overall as someone who loves survival games this was more of a barebones melee focused battleroayale who just slapped "survival" on it's name and called it a day. There was no hunger system at play, no thirst and just no "game" besides looting trees for wood and skin from couches (yes I'm serious) for clothes upgrades. Oh yea and director would usually picked their favorite player based on their profile picture and just sabotaged anyone else around them, if not, Director would just straight up say "hey there is someone tracking you right behind you *proceeds to give exact location of the player* and thus ending the game before you even got to final circle. If you didn't listen to him he'd debuff you so had you might as well dc because you didn't fulfill his powerfantasy.

Ngl you missed a lot of points, the game actually died because the community was split, because the beta version was like a completely different game, and full release is the version you’re talking about, and people would quit because of it, and the new players liked it but the old players stayed in customs to play the old version, and because of this the new players had long wait times and eventually the new players quit to

it was tough. i think that this game had so much potential and the release ultimately made all the old players quit and not want to return as it was such a different vibe and feel. it’s hard to take in and hopefully this game will be carried on and made better in the future, but for now you can only remember how it really was in its prime

I think the most interesting part and the part I would like the most to be reinvented by someone else is the spectator game Director concept.

I got to play the game when it was FTP. It was fun and I really think it would've been a bit more active if it started as FTP.

I could go on a rant about darwin project, but I'll keep it short. As many people have mentioned pre-release was better and caused a few players who were still there to leave. You also want to remember that the game was on consoles too, meaning player numbers were a bit higher than you might think. I've played the game for years and even when there was a large amount of people, I still saw a few players multiple times in games. With voice chat proximity and voice chat even for directors there was a lot of really nice people to talk to and hear have small rivalries against each other. It definitely had a sense of community which is why I think the game still has at least a few players today.

I think the problem with this "meticulous battle" type of design is that at the end of the day, if the way you win a match is killing an enemy, it will always be most rewarding doing that faster or in a flashier way. The concept of only 3 classes that you can customize sounds amazing, but you need to make sure the 3 are balanced while keeping the concept of freedom of choice. Eventually a more efficient way of "winning" will appear and in an ideal game of this type, they would give the resources to the player to create their own strategy to shut that down and keep a cycle of creativity without having to nerf or buff one of the classes, because if you have to focus on fixing your game instead of making new content you entered a countdown to failure. It's obvious they wanted to reward being creative in how you defeat an enemy after engaging in the tracking and searching resources aspect, but at the end this parts weren't as fun as the combat, and the combat wasn't enjoyable enough at the end to justify long matches this type of game wants to create. I think the game failed by giving a bow + axe. If they really wanted to reward mele combat, giving projectiles is the worst way of doing that. I think a shield would have been ideal (I didn't play this game, so tbh im just daydreaming a game I would play now) that way you really give the option of choosing between mobility, attack or defense. You need to reward the player properly if they decide to try and be creative with how they play. If you go Mobility you do less damage but you do it more often, land enough hits while staying close to enemies and you get a damage buff or crit effect. Give them short axes with less range and damage so you have to be really good at getting in and out while dodging if you want to use their full potential. Defense is all about finding resources and becoming a tank. Get found out early when you are slow and vulnerable and you are more likely to die, but be sneaky and farm well and you are untochable late game. Shields could have all types of effects but you need to find the right materials to activate them. Maybe a shield bash to unlock mobility+damage at the final stage of the game? or maybe special materials that return damage? Is an ice map, what about an ice shield that slows or even stuns the enemy? They also have an axe but combat is always with the shield in the other hand, but you still havent level it up, so while not completly helpess in the early game they really want to avoid combat against the other two classes. Finally make Damage a true glass canon. Let them make an axe with a rope so they are the only ones who have a type of projectile, let them have fire axes, double axes. Give them the tools to kill like they have guns, but like everyone else they have to make them and find you to kill you. Then it becomes a rock paper scissors at the end game, but everyone has their own unique way of getting there and you may die before that. Or kill before that, it'll depend on your skill, game knowledge or strategy. Tanks are strong agains mobility, they have the tools to survive their damage and even if they dont land a hit they wont die fast, giving them time to run away or land a counter attack. Late game they have all the resources to shut down Mobilty They get destroyed by damage tho, so they must avoid them and be extra good to run away if they face one, and even in the late game, they will melt you eventually if you are not good enough using the resources you got. Mobility is the nightmare for Damage, they will duel them over and over, and if they are good, eventually they will deal the same damage for a window of time while keeping the superior speed. They are pure skill, feast or famine. Give them tools to track early and cheaper weapons that make them op in the mid game but fell down if they take too long to finish a game. Give them little health to force them to dodge. Damage will be solid at all stages of the game, but that also means he can fall behind at any point if you are not careful. They can look for fights early or try to reach a point where they can 2 shoot an enemy, but they need to land those hits live everyone else and unlike the other classes, all their resoruces are damage oriented. They will have the tools to land a hit on Mobility or melt Tanks eventually, but they can loose to mobility in early-mid, and while strong against tanks, they need to find them or make sure they get to late game with the right tools for shuting them down.

i wish the Darwin Project survived. I loved the combat, as well as the show director aspect. Whenever a player did something like get a kill or narrowly escape a bad fight, i'd reward them. If they cowered in a corner i would flush them out into combat. Just a really cool game that i wish didn't die.

My boyfriend and I would DESTROY on this game. When we heard they were stopping development of the game we were absolutely devastated. The game, the mechanics, and everything were just so unique and different than other br games, especially the implementation of the show director. Ugh! Wish this game became popular. Such a waste of what could've been pure perfection.
