When I got mine, it was stiff around the head and wasn't comfortable in the beginning. I wore it every day and worked on it for the next while...now it is a VERY comfortable lid! Give it time to mold to your head and you will love this hat! I have about 6 Akubras and highly recommend this brand!

I swear by Akubras. Right now, I have 3: a Slouch Hat (Digger's Hat), The Territory and the Coober Pedy. The Coober Pedy is my dress hat; the others are Daily Drivers. I switch between the two hats, to give the hat time to dry out. I love my Territory because it looks like a fedora with a more commanding brim with lots of sun coverage. If you get this or a Riverina, always buy a stampede string. These hats will take off in a decent wind. My Coober Pedy is my town hat / Sunday hat. I have worn fur felt hats for decades. Akubras are tanks. I think they're better made than the equivalent Stetson or Reistol. The only downside is that you might have to find a milliner who is not factory authorized to clean and reblock your Akubra. (I found a milliner here in Boston who can do this work... he asks that you talk to him before purchasing an Akubra, to make sure he has the right blocks.) Buy from an Australian retailer for the best deals and selections. I've worn Stetsons and Akubras. For the same quality level, Stetsons tend to be more expensive and the Akubras tend to be a bit more sturdy. It's easy to find a milliner who cleans and reblocks Stetsons. I first got a Slouch Hat because I was going to spend the better part of a summer in Europe. Since I was going to be out a lot, I wanted a hat that provided good sun protection and that didn't scream American. (Even though I am a born and bread American, I speak English with a West Midlands accent.) I decided on Akubras because: An Aussie would wear it with pried, a Scot or a Canuck would trade for it, wear it with pride and have a good trading story about it. No one believes I'm a Yank, and that's fine by me. Also, where I live is a hotbed of far left politics. You really don't want to wear a Stetson or fur Cowboy hat around here, because these buttholes associate this type of hat with the far right / Trumpism.

Lol, great comment. I get comments about it all the time , mine is still not quite broke in yet , still feel hard on the head if I haven't worn it for a bit , but I live in it in the summer. What does reblock mean?

I agree akubras better than stetsons.just got an coober pedy today took it out in the rain now sitting with a hat stretcher/retainer.i don't steam them rain or mist from a hose works good every time

Excellent video! Another Akubra guy here, from Finland. Cattleman was my first one, soon afterwards I got the Coober Pedy, and then the Blue Mountains. Collection growing by the year. Working hat, dress hat - all Akubras are awesome headwear, fit to wear anywhere, really. The unlined ones, work hats, just stay cooler. And the lining of a dress hat, no one is seeing from the outside it anyway (except when they ask you about the hat and you can then show it off). Living in a Nordic country, Finland, I soon came to realize wearing an Akubra is not for a shy person. People notice it and get genuinely intrigued by good-looking headwear, they are a rarity here, nowadays. And if you ponder about getting a work hat, or a dress hat, worry not - you can always buy the lining afterwards for a work hat, or get rid of the lining, just like you can shape your hat however you wish. If wondering about the size, get a bigger size indeed. Easier to make a bigger one fit, by inserting pads inside the sweatband (I actually bought cheap soft shoe soles and cut pieces from those to get a perfect fit for a new hat), or by shrinking, than by trying to stretch a hat for bigger size.

Very good video. Great looking hat. I have 2 Akubra Campdraft. Comfortable fit and takes rain and snow like a champ. Rain and snow doesn't even faze it. Best quality and very affordable hat.

Great review. I just bought one last week and my head size is 58cm. I was told to get a 59cm when 58 felt a lot better and snug. I was told akubras take time to settle in and the leather band will eventually shrink overtime. In your experience do they shrink a lot I’m having seconds thoughts to return the hat and get a size down. Thanks

That's a tough one, mine can be a little loose , especially after I shave my head but I think a size down would be to tight, it's easier to pad it out a bit then to stretch it I think

Wooly, I picked up a Dorfman Pacific Wool felt Westen Outback at my local Tractor Supply Company for $30. Its very similar to the Scala. I've been wearing it for three weeks. I've wore it on 90'F days, kayaking, in rain and the sun . It does very well. Much better than a cotton ball cap. I wear a ball cap for mowing the yard, weedeating, splitting wood chainsaw tasks and getting dirty. But when I'm casually outside the wool felt hat is nice. Keeps the sun off my head, rain off my glasses and doesn't retain sweat odors as much. It has a cloth elastic head band makes it so comfortable to wear and its light. Great piece of head gear to wear just about anywhere in the world. I couldn't deal with tropical climates or the jungle. It gets warm enough in upstate New York, haha!

I've had a couple of Akubras, one was a copy of the Indiana Jones hat, the other was an ancient large brimmed one like yours. My new one is called the Humphrey, named after the Jazz trumpet player Humphrey Littleton. Looks like short brimmed trilby. All of them have been great hats, all made of the same great quality fur felt. My favourite is the old ancient one. No leather sweat band, no hat band, looks like it's been through the wars, but it has character 😀

Hot tip, you can actually pull that thin steel wire out of the hat band with a pair of plyers. Makes the hat more comfortable and mould to your head faster.

Only if you get them wet and let them dry not on your head. Then they can, like all hats can. Your head will dry the hat very quickly as 80% of body heat loss is via the head. Your head will cause the hat to be dry in a matter of hours.

My late cousin gifted me a lined Akubra Cattleman almost 20 years ago. It’s one size too big, but I can’t find it in myself to sell it as I consider it a keepsake. 🥰 I am on the hunt though for a… Whelp! Looks like a seller just accepted my offer on a used, but mint condition, unlined Akubra Snowy River (in my size!) as I type this! Yay!!! 😄

Fold a tissue and tuck it in the back of the hat band/leather band. it will make it your size.

Being Australian I _have to_ say Akubras are the best hats; being honest, I say they _are_ the best hats. 😂 I have 6 of them. 😂 2x campdrafts 3x federation IV 1x Hampton I modify some of mine to my liking. Cut brims and 2” NOS 1920s ribbons on the campdrafts. 1/2” ribbon on the Hampton, etc. I remove the liners in them all as well. I also take the wire out..I hate the wire. Bashing an open crown hat is the best part of owning a hat.
