Al Black -- one of the 26 original Highwaymen artists visits our homeschool coop to teach our kids how to paint like the Highwaymen.
The Highwaymen are a group of 26, mostly self-taught, African-American artists who painted their own unique "old-Florida" style paintings. For decades they toiled in obscurity trying to carve out a living by painting beautiful landscapes using construction material and oil paint. Al Black sold the group’s art from the trunk of his car for $25 per painting, but in the 1990’s were lifted from obscurity due to an article telling their amazing story.
Al Black is not only one of the original 26, but one of the core group of 8 from the 1960s. Al Black began as the Highwaymen’s premier salesman, but learned to paint so he could repair smudges since the paintings were often sold while wet. Al began painting after Alfred Hair was murdered in 1970. Since then he has become a prolific painter who has art displayed in the White House, the Florida State Capitol, and the Smithsonian Institution.
Al Black kindly offered to visit our homeschool group and teach our kids to paint, but also shared his story and the beginning of his involvement with the Highwaymen.
