In real life, his uncle had that same personality. That's how he got this character. Everyone who auditioned was taking the Jackie Gleason route. Al was doing theatre at the time . Imagine that! Someone put it in a producers or directors ear, and the rest is history.

Ed O'Neil aka Al Bundy is an excellent actor. Because he played Al for 10 seasons on Married with Children and Jay Pritchett on Modern Family for 11 seasons. Both his characters are polarized opposites. Interesting fact is that his character, Al was a high school football star while Ed was signed undrafted free agent for Pittsburg Steelers in 1969. But he was cut from the team after Ed competed for a spot with "Mean" Joe Greene and LC Greenwood. Greene and Greenwood joined Steelers that became known as the "Steel Curtain" Hall of Fame QB, Terry Bradshaw guest starred on both his series: MWC and Modern Family.
