Al Hirt's classical training at Cincinnati Conservatory really shows through in this masterpiece performance.

Hehe, that was awesome! I do love that song. It's very romantic, though he made it quite upbeat! 😉😊💜

Super great sound on the trumpet. I used to play the cornet. A lot of pinching of the lips 😂.

The cameras using image orthicon tubes at the time had a flaw which is quite apparent in the early portion of this video as he moves the bell of his horn around. Whenever there was a white surface or a reflection like the horn, it produced a surrounding dark halo area. In fact, performers often wore blue shirts instead of white and avoid other white clothing.

Also on these early performances which were video taped, a bright flash from a camera would appear as a momentary black spot rather than a white flash (as it would appear on a filmed performance).

And to think how some no good hooligan busted his lip open. If I remember correctly, it was a brick!

The performance is impressive but I can’t recognise the melody of ‘Night and Day’ at all.

From the 50 second mark, you can recognise the melody. 🎉🎉🎉

Sorry, while technically very skilled, it sounds like a big mess - doesn't swing well..... and sort of sounds a bit like annoying Flight of the Bumble Bee (played a million times on accordion back in that era) beginning at 1 min and 51 sec. I play some trumpet and more keyboard and infrequently guitar but his weird show-offy version gave me a headache.
