The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Al Martino was one of the last crooners who was able to have success on the pop charts as late as the mid-70s. Had the Ed Sullivan Show existed in 1975, I guarantee we would have had the pleasure of hearing Al perform his big hit, 'To The Door Of The Sun", on the program.

That's a great record, as was "The Next Hundred Years", one of his last charters in the '70's.

Thank you for this post! I'm surprised some people have never heard of Al Martino. He was one of the most popular easy listening singers in the '60's and '70's, with his first big hit being the great "Here in My Heart" back in 1952. He charted consistently with a multitude of great records, and had many big-selling albums. A real legend, and one of my favorites. He also played Johnny Fontane in "The Godfather" and sang the theme song "Speak Softly Love". Strangely enough, although he appeared on many other programs, he only performed on the Ed Sullivan show twice. His other appearance was in 1959 singing "I Can't Get You Out of My Heart" and I hope you will upload that performance as well. Thank you again, Ed Sullivan channel!

@@that70sgirl90 Other great records he had were "I Love You Because", "Painted, Tainted Rose", "Spanish Eyes", "Think I'll Go Somewhere and Cry Myself to Sleep", "Living a Lie", "Mary in the Morning", "We Could", "The Next Hundred Years" and so many others. Happy St. Patrick's Day to you too!

I may be confusing it with another movie theme song, but I think that the hit single version of "Speak Softly Love" was by Andy Williams.

I feel like he might have tried to hard to form is charisma after other people rather than having his own, so people would rather just watch the originals than him. So he just didn't catch the fame train too well.
