Al-Nakba: The Palestinian catastrophe
"The Nakba did not begin in 1948. Its origins lie over two centuries ago…."
So begins this four-part series on the 'nakba', meaning the 'catastrophe', about the history of the Palestinian exodus that led to the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948, and the establishment of the state of Israel.
This sweeping history starts back in 1799 with Napoleon's attempted advance into Palestine to check British expansion and his appeal to the Jews of the world to reclaim their land in league with France.
The narrative moves through the 19th century and into the 20th century with the British Mandate in Palestine and comes right up to date in the 21st century and the ongoing 'nakba' on the ground.
Arab, Israeli and Western intellectuals, historians and eye-witnesses provide the central narrative which is accompanied by archive material and documents, many only recently released for the first time.
For Palestinians, 1948 marks the 'nakba' or the 'catastrophe', when hundreds of thousands were forced out of their homes.
But for Israelis, the same year marks the creation of their own state.
This series attempts to present an understanding of the events of the past that are still shaping the present.
This story starts in 1799, outside the walls of Acre in Ottoman-controlled Palestine, when an army under Napoleon Bonaparte besieged the city. It was all part of a campaign to defeat the Ottomans and establish a French presence in the region.
In search of allies, Napoleon issued a letter offering Palestine as a homeland to the Jews under French protection. He called on the Jews to ‘rise up’ against what he called their oppressors.
Napoleon’s appeal was widely publicised. But he was ultimately defeated. In Acre today, the only memory of him is a statue atop a hill overlooking the city.
Yet Napoleon's project for a Jewish homeland in the region under a colonial protectorate did not die, 40 years later, the plan was revived but by the British.

@@HanGangSiyin -- LOL LOL LOL !! may i ask where do you live ??? I can guarentee you that wherever you live, it doesn't belong to you either... your land was ALSO once taken over by wars, invasions or immigrants! And I can ALSO guarantee that if you don't live in one of the "top countries" I spoke of, your country has much much WORSE human rights abuses, oppressions & discriminations! So I would like to know where you're from... & I would be GLAD to do the research & REMIND you what your own country or your own ancestors are ! And let me know if you would be willing to give yours back to those ancient civilizations , religious / ethnic groups different to you today ! Second point --- Do you know that Those "Native" , "indigenous populations" you speak of, were NEVER owners of those lands ?? They never owned or governed the land, neither had a governing tribe or a ruler! They had many tribes spread around, & killed each other for territory ! Literally, stronger tribes attacked other tribes, looted, hacked, raped & wiped the other tribe out ... even gave human sacrifices ! So the truth is keyboard warriors like you wouldn't last a DAY with those tribes... Many tribes actualy surives upto this day, only because they were trained in guns after the europeans arrived ! so instead of learning about "native" people from hollywood movies, STUDY history in details before you speak !

@@researchdesignz haha you picked the wrong person mate. I'm Algerian and was raised in France most of my life. My ancestry is full Amazigh, who have been living in North Africa for over 10.000 years. We've been invaded by so many dynasties, but still our people, language and culture has survived. We've been victims of settler colonization by France for 135 years (just like Palestine is suffering) but thankfully we kicked them out and yes, even the French born in Algeria had to go back. I was born and raised in France because on my dad's side, they had to move to France during WW2 to help during the war (against their will, and got dispossessed of their lands). Algerian people feel a great connection to Palestinian because we've been through the same, and we know that no matter how strong your colonizer is, you can regain your land and your dignity. So no, I don't have colonizers blood.

I admit i am not the most knowledgeable on the Palestine-Israel conflict but I found it very interesting that is actually illegal to acknowledge the “Nakba” in Israel while also letting Israelis have all there rights but Palestinians aren’t given those same rights and live under martial law most of the time. I’ve been doing research recently and another thing I noticed is how the media shows every atrocity committed by Hammas yet the atrocities committed by Israel’s IDF are not shown also the death of innocent Palestinians is barely shown yet a single Israeli death or casualty is shown everywhere.

Nice to see someone educating themselves and seeking truth unlike too many people who blindly believe mainstream media which doesn't report Israeli crime because they own all major mainstream media conglomerates. As mentioned in this documentary Zionists are prolific in propaganda. A common method they use is to commit a crime then say their victim committed it. But taking this into account you can figure out the truth by realising they are using mirror propaganda. A recent example is the bombing of the hospital and the Oct 7 attack. Very narcissistic behaviour which is upheld by not only Israeli officials but many of their citizens. It's like they have all agreed to perpetuate propaganda and when presented with facts they call that propaganda. Furthermore Hamas is a creation of Israel.

I also recently started to educate myself better on this matter. Words cannot really grasp how disappointed I am on with politicians always talking about human rights and not caring a bit about them. Regarding the media: I, too find this awful. Even media that do very good journalism on most other topics seem to do everything to not show anything of the harm the Israelis do (And if they have to downplay it etc), but report five times about every stone thrown by some Palestinian rid of hope and rights.

My life stories with Israeli apartheid: Since the Nakba in 1948, my Palestinian family has been displaced by Israeli forces from Jericho, their birth place, to three different refugee camps in the West Bank until they settled in one camp near Bethlehem, where they started their fourth new life after all of their assets they had in Jericho like houses, farms , shops, and lands were confiscated by the Israelis and simply given away to Israeli settlers who immigrated to Palestine from Eastern Europe. After that my dad worked almost all of his life for Israeli building companies in the occupied West Bank to secure basic needs for his children. My mum and despite her mental illness caused by the displacement trauma, had somehow and miraculously managed to keep us all alive , and together. However the saddest aspect of this brutal Israeli occupation was not the loss of our land in Jericho itself, but the overall poor living conditions we experienced under the apartheid military control where the Israeli soldiers can shoot and kill innocent Palestinians without being prosecuted. Of course, lack of basic human rights has been the main highlight of the Israeli occupiers who did not give neither my mum nor dad any health care, social care, life or health insurance , compensation for displacement , care home or even basic retirement salary as they later became frail and ill. My parents were lucky to bring up a family in such inhumane circumstances and for me they were my biggest heroes and without whom the story of my life would not be possible to tell. The story of my family is just one of millions of similar stories in Palestine and I’m sure there are more horrific stories to be told, but there are also many that can never be heard as their heroes are no longer with us.

On the other hand, Menachem Begin, in his 1952 memoirs, said that without Deir Yassin there wouldn't have been an Israel, and that after it the Zionist forces could "advance like a hot knife through butter". Under advice, he removed these words from subsequent editions. In June 1967, the USS Liberty, an unarmed Navy technical research ship, was attacked by Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats in international waters off the coast of Egypt. The attack killed 34 and injured 171 Americans. Israel slaughtered the people in Deir Yassin to advance the zionists dream of world domination , the NWO. American is in this bad of shape due to the zionist bank known as the federal reserve. It’s a zionist privately owned central bank that controls the issuance of America’s economy. Together biden and the zionist central bank are causing America’s next depression. Over 35 years ago I read that the NWO/Zionists were willing to use a global depression and or WWIII to achieve their goal of World Domination. It looks like they have chosen both the way things are today. With their puppet biden who is willing to destroy America for his zionist puppet masters.

In 1947 Palestine was offered an independent state along with Israel but they rejected the two state partition… because they didn’t want to live in peace with Israel. Living in a country doesn't give you an automatic right to make it your country. Arabs moved there from neighboring Arab countries, like Egypt and Jordan. NONE of them were Palestinian, it has been ruled by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Fatimids, Seljuk Turks, Crusaders, Egyptians and Mamelukes. The Ottomans 1517 /1917. That's a very convenient starting time for arabs, as they always "forget" to mention how this "naqba" started. - They forget to mention that 5 arab armies attacked Israel the day after it was established, BEFORE THE "NAQBA". - they always forget their own role in attacks on the jews and massacares that have been doing since the begining of the 20th century (for example: 1929 Hebron massacare) - they ALWAYS forget to mention their cooperation with Hitler, promising (and executing) to throw all jews to the sea... "From the river to the sea" heard of that? - they forget to mention how they escalated this whole situation for the previous 30 years, starting with trying to rob jewish settlements and causing the jews to establish their own armed forces. Lie #2: actualy its "mind shaping". in the intro when they are talking about jews they always show someone with a gun, when they are talking about arabs they are showing women and children... does it make sense? Lie #3: "Forced out of their homes" Some where indeed, some fled, some were told by the arab leage to leave their homes. This reminded me childhood story "THE CAMEL & THE NOBEL MAN". Once upon a time a man was travelling through the desert along with his camel. It was winter season and nights became very cold in desert. After sunset man decided to take rest and set his camp. Outside camel felt too much cold and requested the man if he can enter his face inside which was accepted. After sometime camel again requested to enter his front legs which was also accepted. But it was not enough for the camel and he entered his rear legs as well. There was not enough space in the camp & the man had to sleep outside in the cold. Israel is"Camel" in this story and the "Nobel Man" is Palestine.

What a story, except that in the real life outside your one sided view, The camp is large enough for both, but the evil man would not let the camel in not an inch. Then came an animal lover who ask the man to share and they did so, but as soon as the AL leave, the evil man want exclusive right attack the Camel but lost and keep n repeating from outside camp, while begging for spport outside. The animal lover is the mandate holder.

Its easy to respond emotionally to this video but did you know that more than 800 000 Jews were expelled from Arabic countries in revenge after 1947. We don't see or hear about this in the news .. why ?? Because Israel took in nearly half of them while others fled and integrated into countries like America, Canada and France. By contrast, Palestinians are deliberately left rotting decades later in refugee camps by Arab countries without full working rights or citizenship. As one example, the Jews of Iraq were expelled and PAUPERIZED overnight; forced to sign over their property and business and leave with whatever they could take in suitcases. In Algeria and Egypt, there were anti-Jewish riots. In Libya, a country where there were 30 000 Jews before 1947, not ONE remains. I would love to hear coverage of this from Al Jazeera and the shrieking left.

@@PropheticAngel75 You should not stop at reading your mythology and try doing some historical research. You avoided commenting on all the damning points I made but one, and that one you got wrong. The Philistines were the people who lived in southern Canaan. "Palestine" is the Latin translation of the Greek word which is a cognate of the Hebrewd "peleshet". The ancient Egyptians also had their form of the word. Your book has nothing historical from the beginning to at least Joshua. All that was just vague oral tradition which was only written down after 600 BCE, i.e. hundreds of years after the supposed events. The creation myths were borrowed from other cultures. Exodus never happened. Joshua never fought a battle at Jericho whose walls were destroyed by an earthquake at least 100 years before before his imagined battle. The falsehoods just continue.

Arab titles of land were stolen from the dead during the Armenian genocide. So most of the land titles they sold to the Jews coming from Europe were simply stolen land from the dead. Likely they were the killers. So it' laughable when they claim anyone stole off of them. But the Euro Jews were buying land at high prices well before the founding. Then add in that Jordan was taken from Israel. Jordan was 75% of the total land. It was the two state solution. Something that media seems to have forgotten and Arabs of the area want to keep very quiet.

During the 1947-1949 Palestine War, an estimated 700,000 Palestinians, constituting about 80% of the Palestinian Arab population, fled or were expelled. Nearly half of this number (about 250,000-300,000 Palestinians) fled or were expelled before the declaration of Israel's establishment in May 1948, and in the period following the war, a large number of Palestinians attempted to return to their homes; Between 2,700 and 5,000 Palestinians were killed by Israel during this period, the vast majority of whom were unarmed and intending to return for economic or social reasons. @@zafarisrar96 Did you know that more than 800 000 Jews were expelled from Arabic countries in revenge after 1947. There is still a sizeable Palestinian Arab presence in Israel whereas the Jewish communities across the Arab world (one exception being Morocco) have DISAPPEARED

I have gained my moral views largely from my Mother. She was a free thinker and considered herself a humanist. She was against all forms of racism and was horrified at the treatment of a young officer she had met whilst serving for the British Army in the second world war. He was from Ghana. He had come to fight for Britain in the war but once the war was over he was regarded as nothing more than a black man who had no place in Britain. They married and gave birth to a daughter. That was in 1948. My Mother had huge admiration for Israel. It was, for her, a country that had been a desert that was turned into a garden by the hard working Jews that had moved to the country. It is an appealing story based on the information that was given to people in many western countries at the time. But what this well researched programme shows is that this appealing story was based on a lie. The land of Palestine was a fertile country occupied by Palestinians of many religious persuasions. What has been done to the Palestinians is wrong. It represents a huge injustice which wil continue to blight the entire world until that injustice is addressed. The world in which governments can control the information that is availabe to their populations is a bygone world. More and more people are becoming aware of the reality that underpins the current horrors of the Middle East. The Palestinian people need to be treated in a manner which recognises their rights and aspirations. Until that occurs this horror will continue to blight the whole of humanity.

We can't go back and change the mistakes of the past but we can learn from them and do better going forward. The leadership of Israel - and those governments which support them - know what is needed to change things for the better. We must assume, given their failure to do the right thing, that they are ok with compounding the mistakes; which must lead us to conclude they have a completely different agenda than world peace!

If you been wondering, then maybe investigate a bit further in order not to fall into the fake ElJazirra propaganda movies... Heres a taste First 2 minutes: Lie #1. Everything starts at 1948. Just FYI 20% of the population in Israel are arabs, who didnt leave... dont you think they would be "forced" too? *BTW they live much better lives in Israel than in ANY of the neighboring countries. ~30% of medical personel in Israel are arabs I have lots of coligues and friends that are arabs

I'm not an israelite but that's their land thousands years ago; the Israelites cannot be defeated even if the whole world should gather, its fact Daniel 4:17 This is the decision of the alert and watchful angels. So then, let all people everywhere know that the Supreme God has power over human kingdoms and that he can give them to anyone he chooses -- even to those who are least important.’ Genesis 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates- the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites." Genesis 17:7-9 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God." Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.

Benjamin Netanyahu states that Palestine was a desert/wasteland & the Arabs had not improved the land. But, we see photos of Arab farmlands, thriving markets with agriculture, water wells & fishing in the ocean. And merchants shipping wares & produce to other countries. The development of the state of Israel was facilitated by the British, in allowing massive immigration of 'settlers' at the expense of Islamic & Christian Arabs who already lived there. And, that was already happening PRE 1935 (WW2)
